2. The British Board of Film Classification was set up in 1912. It clarifies that any film must be
classified in the UK before being shown to the public. That is through inspection whether it
fits a particular genre and what age it should be aimed for (especially judging the time run
and the cost of tickets/fares).
There aim is to :-
-Protect the public from seeing anything risky especially for kids.
-Recognise and respect adult freedom of choice within the law
-Respond to and reflect changing social attitudes towards media content through proactive
public consultation and research
-Provide a cost-effective, efficient classification service within our statutory remit
-Work in partnership with the industry to develop innovative service models to provide content
advice which support emerging media delivery systems
-provide an effective service to enforcement agencies
