2. What is Poverty?
Poverty is:
The deprivation of food, shelter, money and
clothing that occurs when people cannot
satisfy their basic needs.
In short, Poverty is when people are unable to
even afford BASIC needs (food, water).
3. Case Study: Martin Fisher and KickStart
Martin Fisher was a social entrepreneur who co-founded
a Social Enterprise called KickStart.
His work began when he first encountered poverty in
Kenya, where he expected to stay on for 10 months. He
stayed for 17 Years.
In that time, he developed new technology, constructed
new school buildings, and trained many of the less
fortunate there to start businesses.
4. What KickStart does:
KickStart focuses on helping the less
fortunate by using engineering to create
better income for them.
An example would be their water pump, of
which they have contributed 209,500 to the
less fortunate.
They have also moved 680,000 people out of
poverty across the world, as of September
2012.
