PROJECTS
THE EFFECTS OF SCREEN TYPE, AMBIENT
ILLUMINATION, & FONT SIZE ON THE
READABILITY OF SMART WATCH INTERFACES
USER STUDY
My Role: Lead Researcher
Project Highlights:
-Objective: to determine the effect of varying ambient
lighting conditions, text size, screen type, and
information location on readability of information
displayed on smartwatch devices.
-Method Design: this included the experimental design,
identifying the required apparatus, defining the
procedure in detail, & obtaining IRB (Institute Review
Board) approval.
-Participant Recruitment: participants were recruited
through social media postings.
-Setting up the usability lab: I set up the usability lab with
all the required apparatus including smartwatches, a
stand, and an AV system.
-Running User Sessions (survey administration &
participant observation): 32 users were observed while
using each smartwatch under 3 lighting conditions using
2 different font sizes. Each participant completed a
total of 12 tasks. Metric data was collected for each
user task.
-Data Analysis & Interpretation: Results indicated there
was a statistically significant difference in participant
reading time when watch type and lighting condition
were manipulated, a significant difference in
participant reading errors when lighting condition was
manipulated, a significant difference in participant
reading comprehension when Watch Type, Information
Location, and Font Size were manipulated, and a
significant difference in participant answer time when
information location was manipulated.
USER CYBER SECURITY BEHAVIORAL
DIFFERENCES in GENERATION-XERS vs.
MILLENNIALS
REMOTE USER STUDY
My Role: Lead Researcher
Project Highlights:
-Objective: analyze, evaluate, and compare user
online behavior to identify generational differences in
internet use & behavior.
-Method Design: users participated in an online survey
that consisted of 7 scenarios users typically encounter
while using the web. Users were asked how they would
typically behave in such scenarios.
-Tools: Qualtrics
-Participant Recruitment: 31 participants were recruited
through social media postings.
-Data Analysis & Interpretation: Data analyzed allowed
researchers to conclude: Millennials showed higher
concern for their online privacy, however, were more
likely to engage in risky behavior when online limitations
apply.
SHUTTERFLY USABILITY EVALUATION
HEURISTIC EVALUATION & USER STUDY
My Role: Lead Researcher
Project Highlights:
-Objective: evaluate Shutterfly.com to identify usability issues
and areas for improvement. The evaluation was a function of
two parts: a heuristic evaluation and a user study.
-Method Design: users participated in 3 tasks thought to be
detrimental to the success of Shutterfly.com on
Shutterfly.com. Users also completed one of the tasks on a
top competitor’s website.
-Participant Recruitment: 16 participants were recruited
through social media postings. Participants were placed into
one of two groups: novice users or experienced users.
-Setting up the usability lab: I set up the usability lab with all
the required apparatus including a laptop with screen
capture software & an AV system.
-Running User Sessions (survey administration & participant
observation): surveys were used to collect participant
demographic information. Metric data was collected as
users were observed completing each task.
-Data Analysis & Interpretation: the full report includes a
summary of the metric data organized by task number as
well as what these findings entail. Usability problems
identified included Global (principle based) Usability Issues,
and Local (specific to individual pages) Usability Issues).
DAISO JAPAN WEBSITE USABILITY EVALUATION
HEURISTIC EVALUATION, USER STUDY, & WEBSITE
RESDESIGN
My Role: Lead Researcher
Project Highlights:
-Objective: to identify key behavioral patterns that users
display when accomplishing a goal on the interface, or
navigating the website by exploration.
-Method Design: The study consisted of three parts: a user
study, a heuristic evaluation, and a website redesign. The
user study evaluated the usability metric Efficiency in Use.
Users were observed and timed in their performance of two
tasks. The heuristic evaluation evaluated the usability metrics:
User Control and Freedom, Metaphors, Visibility, Feedback,
and Affordances. The comparative study compared various
components of the Daiso Japan website to components of
two industry competitors (Target and Walmart).
-Participant Recruitment: a total of 15 participants were
recruited through social media postings.
-Setting up the usability lab: I set up the usability lab with all
the required apparatus including a laptop with screen
capture software & an AV system.
-Running User Sessions (survey administration & participant
observation): surveys were used to collect participant
demographic information. Metric data was collected as
users were observed completing each task.
-Data Analysis & Interpretation: the full report includes a
summary of the metric data organized by usability metrics
and interface elements. The full report also includes
screenshots of the website redesign.
