Defining Moments on the Road to Jerusalem - Luke 19:28-40 Terry Dorsett
On the first Palm Sunday Jesus made His way to Jerusalem. It was a journey full of defining moments that led to Him fulfilling His destiny. Our own lives are also full of defining moments that help us discover and fulfill God's plan for our lives.
Pursuing the world's definition of joy is like riding on the interstate highway. We just naturally assume that’s the fastest and surest way to where we are going, that is, until we hit a sig alert or an ice storm that has caused the crashes of hundreds of cars. God defines "joy" differently than you and I do. It is deeper, richer, and anchors us in the midst of the storms of life. But to build that kind of "joy" requires us to take "back roads," roads that God "re-routes" us to in order to get us where He wants us to be--eternal "joy."
An overview of the story of the Bible and the subsequent history of the Church. I wrote this a while ago and would do it differently now, but it still has value.

To truly calculate the cost, you must consider both the cost of action and the cost of inaction not only for the near term but in the long term. Jesus calls us to a decision. Choose wisely.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

1. Luke 19:28-29
After Jesus had said this, He went on
ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As He
approached Bethphage and Bethany at the
hill called the Mount of Olives, He sent two
of His disciples, saying to them,

2. Luke 19:30-31
‘Go to the village ahead of you, and as you
enter it, you will find a colt tied there,
which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and
bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are
you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’

3. Luke 19:32-36
Those who were sent ahead went and
found it just as He had told them. As they
were untying the colt, its owners asked
them, ‘Why are you untying the colt?’ They
replied, ‘The Lord needs it.’ They brought it
to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and
put Jesus on it. As he went along, people
spread their cloaks on the road.

4. Luke 19:37-38
When He came near the place where the
road goes down the Mount of Olives, the
whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to
praise God in loud voices for all the
miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king
who comes in the name of the Lord!’
‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’

5. Luke 19:39-42
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to
Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’ ‘I
tell you,’ He replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the
stones will cry out.’ As He approached
Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it
and said, ‘If you, even you, had known on
this day what would bring you peace—but
now it is hidden from your eyes.

6. Luke 19:43-44
The days will come upon you when your
enemies will build an embankment against
you and encircle you and hem you in on
every side. They will dash you to the
ground, you and the children within your
walls. They will not leave one stone on
another, because you did not recognize the
time of God’s coming to you.’
