Yehoshua sent spies into Ai to see how the people would react if the Israelites conquered it. When Yehoshua attacked Ai with only 3000 soldiers, thinking it was weak, the Israelites were defeated. Hashem told Yehoshua that an Israelite named Achan had stolen precious items from Jericho in disobedience, which caused their defeat. Yehoshua devised a plan where some Israelites attacked Ai directly while 30,000 laid in ambush, tricking the king into leaving the city undefended so they could capture and burn it, achieving victory.

2. Let’s see what will
happen if we conquer
it!
Yehoshua told meraglim to go into Ai and see how the people there would
behave if Bnei Yisrael conquer it.

3. Yehoshua only told 3000 soldiers to go into Ai because he
thought Ai was weak.

4. The Jews did not know why they lost. Hashem gave Yehoshua a
message saying some one has stolen something.

Achan stole something precious and some valuable metals like gold
and silver.

6. Because Achan did not obey Hashem , he was killed.

7. Yehoshua was thinking, then thought of a plan. He told thirty thousand men to
wait behind the walls of Ai. Meanwhile, he and a smaller army would attack.

Ai started to attack the Jews.

The Jews pretended to escape and the king of Ai ran after them that meant no
one was protecting the city.

10. Yehoshua lifted his javelin to show a sign to the Jews that were waiting to go
into Ai and set it on fire.

11. The Jews had won !
