17. ROLE OF HISTIDINE AS A BUFFER
• Histidine attributes to maximum buffering
action of albumin and hemoglobin as buffers
because of the extra charged groups
Increases polarity of the molecule
• Fe2+ of heme moiety of hemoglobin is
attached with globulin at 2 histidine
molecules designated as; the proximal and
the distal Histidine residues

29. Lysine & Hydroxylysine residues important in cross linking
in elastin & collagen molecules. OH group attaches to 𝛅
carbon of lysine.
The ε (epsilon) amino group of Lys form sciff’s base
linkage with the prosthetic group of proteins. Eg., PLP
with transaminases.
29
30. Lys forms salt bridges which maintains the structural
configuration of proteins. Eg., Quaternary structure of
Hb.
Lys is found in histone proteins of the DNA.
Bacterial putrefication (decarboxylation) of Lysine in the
intestine forms cadaverine

Mental retardation
Cortical degeneration;
characterized by nerve cell
loss & shrinkage (atrophy) of
multiple areas of the brain
