Editor's Notes

  1. Baruun-Urt is the capital of Sukhbaatar Aimag (province), which is located in eastern Mongolia, bordering China. It is a 12 hour bus ride to largest city and capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar. 15,000 live in Baruun-Urt. The surrounding scenery is flat grass lands where the sunrise and sunsets are beautiful. In 1990 Mongolia had a democratic revolution from Soviet Union. Since then Mongolia has needed
  2. Peace Corps recruits people from all over the country and from all ages. Each one of you individuals has something interesting and unique to offer to the Mongolian people. Mongolian’s are eager to learn American skills, knowledge, ways, and experience American traditions all of which you are capable of giving them.
  3. My CED group comprised of 6 volunteers. Lee – 68 years old, retired from a successful career in developing Las Vegas’s hotels and casinos. He came with an extensive experience and knowledge Robert and Minni – 32 years old, 10 years experience in Financial business work. Brian – 25 years old, 3 years experience in teaching economics and had a wealth of knowledge on all business subjects. Britta and Jeremey – Both right out of college which little work experience. No matter what your background is you will be successful in your position as a Volunteer because you share your skills with the Mongolian community. I brought skills and experience to the Business Sector that Lee could not. I went about teaching business in a hands on manor where Brain taught business through power-points. This diversity makes our work a collective effort as we increase business skill in Mongolia.
  4. Bayarjaral better know as BJ because his name was hard to pronounce, was my main co worker. This relationship became so much more then just co workers because we spend hours together everyday in our office. A friendship built on trust, dependence, and interest was made during these days. We trusted each other as we shared our thoughts and feelings toward different subjects, I depended on him to help me with so many things as I lacked the language and cultural knowledge required to navigate things on my own, and interest in learning about each others culture and life style. One of my favorite memorizes is when BJ asked me what I thought about corruption and the current event of people building without the approval of the Ulaanbaatar government. He asked what I thought they should do destroy the buildings that were built illegally, which wastes a lot of money or not. I explained that I believe more would be gained in the long run by destroying one building as it encouraged people to follow the law leading to less corruption. I further explained that by teaching society, to comply with regulations encourages developed countries to invest in Mongolia, which generates more money for the country in the long run. These encouraged BJ to think how money could be gained by ending corruption through taking one building down. This enabled him to recognize the possibilities for Mongolian’s future. You all have the ability and knowledge to help someone recognize the possibilities for the future. This is a rewarding job because you can see the imprint you leave on an individual just through simple discussions.
  5. Another way I did capacity building with BJ is by developing his project idea of wanting to open a coffee shop in our town where there was currently none. He was unsure as to how to go about it. Together Bayarjargal and I wrote a business proposal to start a Coffee Shop. We discussed each part of the business plan such as the mission, market potential, and financial aspects individually. Through doing this he learned what business areas are important to focus on and look for opportunities in. He continuously came to work with new ideas about how to make the Coffee Shop better and. He also reported daily on different opportunities with in the community that would help our Coffee Shop. Examples are after attending a school event he realized that we could include school as part of our market because they needed pastries for every day tea breaks or he suggested that we meet with different offices and sell pastries while telling them about our business to raise money and awareness. These examples demonstrate Bayarjargal’s progress towards graining business knowledge and skills. After working together to make a business plan we developed his business skills and abilities so in the future he can easily carry out the process again and teach others.
  6. These goals are easily achieved. Everyone one has the knowledge and skills to help the people there country and usually this leads to a great friendship that you can hold in your heart for years to come. Each one of you has a great understanding of America and people in your country are so eager to learn about America that this goal comes so naturally never day that you forget you are actually working. Again an easily achieved goal make Peace Corps work fun and rewarding as all your friends, family, and people who know your family are all dying to hear about everything you are doing in your country
  7. The following slides are all the trainings I did for the Men and Women living in Sukhbaatar. I capitalized on the skills and knowledge I had acquired throughout my life which made trainings so successful. Each one of you has acquired unique and valuable skills throughout the years that can help so many Men and Women in the country you serve.
  8. I have conducted four-hour hair dressing training on Friday and Saturday weekly. Each week the stylists learned ten new vocabulary words based on the materials I used. When I conducted the trainings, I would ask a stylist in English to assist me by providing necessary objects during the service such as towel, shampoo, cutting cape, and scissors. I taught basic skills to improve their services such as blow dry styling, bang trim, extreme curls using the flat iron, cornrows, texture, highlights, and perms. These trainings are open to all stylists in Baruun-Urt. 15 passionate stylist have been motivated to better their skills and have bettered there salaries because of it.
  9. I continued teaching the hair dressers by contacting Mater Designs a company in Ulaanbaatar that conducts trainings and has competed in international hair shows. Three hair dressers came to Sukbaatar aimag for five days and taught the same material I did which reinforced the material while also eliminating the language barrier and also incorporating Asian trends. This project was a huge success because through the trainings I conducted, I showed the hair dressers a different perspective on styling hair. This encouraged them to continue seeking out more opportunities to learn and better their skills in order to provide a better service and to strengthen their business. This work shows clearly the impact you can have on a country through the skill you have. There were 15 hairdressers that partook in this training, each paying 200,000 tugs, which amounted to a total of 3,000,000 tugs in five days. If you compare this total to my salary in five days, 51,665 tugs, you compile data for an output indicator that specifies that my work accomplished Peace Corps objects such as appreciative inquiry, sustainability, and is well worth the American investment, making foreign aid advisable.
  10. The next step was to identify how to increase the value of the salon business. As I asked myself, what clients liked and what they wanted I recognizing how much the community valued beauty and completely dressing for Shine Jil (New Years). This exploration led me to discover the hole in the salon business. The community was good at doing their make-up but the salon had a potential to capitalize on this service to make clients make-up look professional. I designed and implemented a make-up business capitalizing on local desires to spend money on beauty priorities for Shine Jil parties. Together my counterpart and I advised the salon about business financials by breaking down the daily feasible income and compelling it weekly to show how much they could grow their business through the make-up trainings I already conducted. Think of little activities that you do everyday. These can be turned into trainings for people in your community. On the first day, I showed salon owners how they could make money to cover the costs of the produces and make revenue as I demonstrated American make-up techniques on client allowing the community to become aware of their desire and demand more. They marketed the new skills via the television, which drove customers into the salon excited about the new add on services. On the second day, I personally assigned people to specific roles making sure the project would maintain sustainability by becoming an encouraging co-facilitator as the salon continued servicing the high demand of clients. Through the enthusiasm by salon owners, employees, and customers, this project was so successful we hired and train two unemployed individuals that could service the demand of customers. By the fourth day, I left the salon to encourage employees to conduct their own work without reliance on me. The business continued to thrive throughout the week as employee’s incorporated Mongolian trends to satisfy the customer such as catering to Asian facial features of making the nose appear smaller and the eyes bigger.
  11. Peace Corps encourages cross sector collaboration. This project brought together the business and heath sectors. We taught the hairdressers about the importance of HIV/Aids. Through a condom demonstration and a power point presentation I make hairdressers aware how important it is to talk about these topics especially to there clients who they have built close and personal relationships with.
  12. I have taught friends and co-workers how to bake different kinds of cakes, cookies, and pastries; I generated interest within the community in exploring new products to be sold at the local markets. Many people started to call for their own lessons on how to bake new goods which led to economically developing a bakery by enhancing owner’s business skills, through identifying local resources to utilize in new recipes, as well as discovering additional products she could sell to generate additional income. Since these baked goods were sold at a local market it has driven customers to want more new food possibilities, leading to the change process of this town as they yearn for the potential opportunities.
  13. Recently Luxwood Co joined the Chamber of Commerce. They planned to build 250 houses before winter started. I maintained a close relationship with the director and discussed the on goings of the project. When business started to lag behind projected dates I encouraged him to maintain productivity because it is a good business skill. Recognized the importance of this business knowledge and took action to ensure the projected finish date was met.
  14. The Chamber of Commerce would always find different trade shows to go to. This allowed our members to sell there products to different people. Here is an example of the different products members of the Chamber of Commerce made to sell.
  15. These was another project I worked on with the TEFL sector. Bonnie Nelson and her counter part both english teachers and I made 10 power point presentation for a Business English class at there university. This also was a great way for BJ to learn English. In order to receive feedback, I used the curriculum to teach BJ business English. This enabled us to revise the lessons before teaching them to the university students which allowed for a better learning experience. With active listening and monitoring, I found ways to improve the curriculum based on Mongolians learning style. After four lessons I gave Bj a fill in the black test to assess his knowledge and skills of what he learned. He scored an 8/12 on his first try helping him recognize what knowledge he did not retain. On the second try he received a perfect score. After retaking the test, he understood the meanings of the four words he had mistaken. This gained knowledge was indicated when he used one of the misidentified words correctly in a business meeting the next day. The next slides are examples of our business english power point presentation
  16. Every American holiday I would have a party. This allowed them to experience the holiday the way Americans would. The loved Christmas the most because they had all seen Christmas celebrated in movies but had never experienced it first hand. The excitement they got in opening a present from under a Christmas tree is something ill never forget.
  17. All my friends loved to make cakes and eat them. They just could not believe that I new how to make so many different kinds of cakes. I translated recipes into Mongolian and there are being spread throughout the town.
  18. Men loves to be a part of cooking and eating the new recipes. It is a great community project.
  19. One of my favorite jobs was speaking English with people who wanted to improve there skills. This was a great way to make great friends because we would share each others stories of our lives as we spoke English to each other. Since schools give people the opportunity to learn English grammar, I would only practice speaking and comprehension with my students giving them the unique opportunity to practice with a native speaker. Octunzel went from speaking a little English to being able to form full sentences.
  20. Mongolians are always wondering about ways to stay health. They are always asking about what foods they should eat, how to lose weight, and good exercises to do. Yoga was a great way for me to address all these questions. People loved doing yoga together as a big group.
  21. My HCA helped my cosmetology work in Baruun-Urt. This project is community-driven, as my boss recognized citizens, as they expressions there desire to raise the standard of hairdressers in the community. CCI successfully acquired three hair salons as members and have trained 15 styles to expand their services and improved their skills. Unfortunately I am unsuccessful at getting my HCA to be existed about the project I feel would be most beneficial to developing business for the Chamber of Commerce businesses. I successfully through my enthusiasm for the business subject, I was able to train people who have the willingness to learn, discover, and motivate the community to build future successful businesses.
  22. In the end I inspired so many people in my community to dream more, learn more, and do more with there lives. Therefore I feel my service was very successful and fulfilling.
