Life has loveliness to sell,
All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children's faces looking up
Holding wonder like a cup.
All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children's faces looking up
Holding wonder like a cup.
All beautiful and splendid things,

Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like the curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain,
Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit's still delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be
Spend all you have for loveliness,
Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Metaphor- Tells us that love is like a salesperson that wants to sell us loveliness.
  • #4 Introduction to a sales pitch -saying like let me tell you what we got.
  • #5 the specifics. We have three examples of loveliness : ocean, fire, and kids. (IMAGERY)
  • #6 1-IMAGERY- we imagine the blue waves of ocean turned into white when crashed on the cliff -ALLITERATION: (W) uniformity of waves change intothe word cliff (crash)
  • #7 2-ALLITERATION: (S) rhythmical feel of dance - PERSONIFICATION here, giving fire the human characteristics of singing and dancing
  • #8 children's faces- this image of kids makes things a little more happy. LIKE A CUP (SIMILE) -iambic tetrameter (gives us the sound of DA DUM DA DUM)
  • #9 2ND stanza starts the same way first stanza. This refrain acts kind of like the chorus in a song—the catchy part. The repetition reinforces that sense of song or nursery rhyme.
  • #10  (simile) to describe music: it's "like a curve of gold." We get the bright color of gold, the sense of something that is very valuable, smooth texture, -writer gives visual presentation of music rather that sound -very fitting way to describe music, because we know that music is more than about its sound.
  • #11  The scent of pine trees, a lover's arms- these things are for the delight of the senses, the delight of the body. -the use of YOU : we feel like the speaker is talking to US. This really pulls the reader into the poem.
  • #12 The "holy thoughts that star the night," are for the "spirit's’ delight”. -Metaphor, making thoughts or ideas into stars in the night sky. -Spirit makes us think of things like the soul, something we can't see or touch. -The word holy brings to mind the sacred
  • #13 Directing us to buy all the loveliness life has to offer, no matter the cost.
  • #14 last four lines explain why we should buy all that loveliness (even if in what cost).
  • #15 speaker : one hour of the "peace" that comes from an appreciation of life's loveliness is worth many years of strife and hardship— -that all of life's difficulties are worth it for just a "breath" of the "ecstasy" life's loveliness can provide. -
  • #16 An appreciation of the simple, lovely things in life is more important than the past ("all you have been") or the future (all you "could be"). BARTER. The cost of loveliness is a willingness to endure life's hardships and pain.
