Barcamps are self-organized, participant-driven conferences focused on new media and technology topics that originated in 2005 and have since spread globally, including to Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Over 100 barcamps have been held in this region since 2007 on topics like blogging, education, and bridging technology with civil society groups. Regional barcamps are characterized by non-governmental support, inclusion of investment networking events, and varying use of wikis or other tools to organize sessions. Future trends may include greater commercial sponsorship, more specialized topics, and experimentation with discussion-based formats to maintain the original open spirit of barcamps.
