Japan was first settled around 35,000 years ago. The Jomon people developed between 10,000-300 BC and were hunter-gatherers. The Yayoi people arrived around 300 BC from Korea and introduced new technologies like metallurgy and rice cultivation. The Kofun period from 250-538 AD saw the rise of powerful clans and adoption of Chinese customs. Buddhism and the Chinese writing system arrived in the Asuka period from 538-710 AD. The imperial court flourished during the Heian period from 794-1185 AD, producing art, poetry and prose. The samurai warrior class also emerged.
