Husk Power Systems provides off-grid electricity to rural villages in India using rice husk as fuel. They have installed over 65 plants serving around 32,500 households. Key benefits include reducing kerosene usage by 6-7 liters per month, saving families money while cutting CO2 emissions. Reliable electricity allows children to study at night, businesses to operate, and communities to stay connected through phone charging. Husk Power Systems employs locally and aims to expand to over 2,000 plants by 2014 to continue providing these social and economic benefits to rural India.

Michigan Energy Forum - September 12, 2013 - Energy Management Technologies
The Michigan Energy Forum will explore new developments in Residential Energy Management, exploring the recent explosion of commercially available technologies and firms offering them to consumers. While commercial energy management is a multi-billion dollar industry, residential energy management has lagged far behind. Three years ago, the few consumers who were interested in residential energy management had to buy hundreds of dollars worth of home automation controls from niche online retailers unless they were lucky enough to participate in pilot programs offered by electrical utility companies testing "smart home" and "demand response" programs. Today, television commercials invite consumers to lease the devices they need to control smart lights, plugs, thermostats and appliances including washers, dryers, thermostats, and water heaters, all for a flat monthly fee from firms such Cable TV giant Comcast, home security giant ADT, and new home automation firms such as Vivint. The MEF will explore these and other technologies that are now, or may soon be, commercially available to help manage and reduce, residential energy consumption.

Green computing
Green computing aims to reduce the environmental impact of IT through more efficient use of resources and responsible disposal of equipment. It involves designing, manufacturing, and disposing of computers and related technologies in an environmentally-friendly way by conserving energy and resources throughout their lifecycle, from development to disposal. The goals of green computing are important given the large and growing environmental effects of the IT industry due to increased power consumption and electronic waste.
Vision towards an Eco city
An eco-city aims to limit pollution, efficiently use resources, and create awareness through various measures such as roof top gardening, use of renewable energy, waste management, and reducing the heat island effect. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind would be used to produce clean electricity. Buildings would be equipped with solar panels and water treatment would allow for reuse. Waste management would include recycling and provide a healthy environment. Resources would be efficiently used by reducing CO2 production and costs while minimizing waste. Awareness would be created around renewable energy, tree planting, cleanliness, and pollution reduction efforts to develop a sustainable eco-city.

Samurai developed shoin-zukuri houses featuring alcoves reflecting the tea ceremony. Shinto shrines had distinctive torii gates and sandō approach. Buddhist temples contained pagodas and main halls housing Buddha images. Castles were strongly fortified demonstrating lordly power. Construction used wood with techniques like yariganna wood splitting for beauty.
