Accountancy Careers
Accountancy is one of the most popular areas of study within Massey Business School. A
degree in accountancy offers graduates a number of employment opportunities, leading
to interesting and satisfying careers. With many professional accreditations, the School of
Accountancy is one of only three institutions in New Zealand and Australia awarded the
prestigious AACSB International accreditation. Only ten other institutions outside the USA
have achieved this distinction.
Accountants work in many different areas including chartered accounting firms (audit, tax,
business services, consulting), business (financial accounting, management accounting,
financial management), finance, banking and the public sector. For example, an accounting
career often begins in a chartered accountancy firm. After completing a professional
qualification (such as CA, CPA, ACCA or CMA) and gaining experience, it is common for
accountants to move to accounting positions in business, and possibly from there go into
management. Alternatively, accountants who stay with accounting firms are likely to develop
specialised areas of expertise and become involved in consulting. Other career paths in
industry, finance, and government are becoming increasingly common.
There are more employment and career opportunities in accounting than in most other areas
of study.
Students who succeed in getting the best jobs have:
• completed an accountancy degree,
• completed all papers needed for a professional qualification such as
CA, CPA, ACCA, or CMA,
• good grades,
• good communication and interpersonal/social skills,
• enthusiasm, leadership, and problem solving skills, and
• a wide range of other interests and skills.

Making the transition from a life in the
army to a career as an accountant
was a massive change; one that
was made easier thanks to studying
with Massey University. The flexible
study options include being able to
view lectures online and participate
in virtual classrooms which allowed
me to study the Bachelor of Business
when I wanted and in a way that
worked for me. The lecturers were
all fantastic; their knowledge and real
world experience helped to bring the
topics alive and provide relevance to
what we were learning. I loved my

the start of my career as an Auditor at
KPMG, where I am applying all that I
learnt.
