Homeothermic or warm-blooded animals like humans and other mammals can maintain a constant internal body temperature through metabolic processes, even when environmental temperatures fluctuate greatly. In contrast, poikilothermic or cold-blooded animals like lizards and snakes do not regulate their internal temperatures, so their body temperatures rise and fall with the temperatures in their external environments.
