Moving SAP Landscapes to Azure
• Usual path to Azure is to plan move into several steps or waves
• Azure Networking allows stretching on-premise network into
Azure using Azure as Virtual Private Datacenter
• Start move of SAP systems into Azure horizontally, e.g. moving
Dev systems of SAP application first
• After adapting processes and operations procedures for Azure,
start moving system vertically, like moving rest of SRM systems
including production system into Azure
• Or start new application deployments like S/4HANA in Azure
• Build group of SAP systems with high communication volume
or low latency communication between together. Move group
as one to Azure
• Customers hardly move VMs from on-premise into Azure
• Instead customers re-install application stack newly on often
own created golden images in Azure
• Database data is getting moved:
• Backup of DBMS on-premise, copy to Azure and restore
in newly installed DBMS instance
• For larger DBMS, customers use SQL serer AlwaysOn,
HANA System Replication or Oracle Data Guard to
Azure hosted instances for extreme short cutover
downtime
• Customers use either DMO (for HANA as destination) or
SAP Migration Monitor to export on-premise, copy
export package to Azure and import into newly
installed DBMS instance
