Avilés is located in northern Spain along the coast of Asturias. With a population of around 84,000 people, it is the third largest city in the region. Avilés developed economically in the 19th century through industry and immigration, improving its important harbor facilities. The city is known for its architecture ranging from Romanesque to Modernism and several important religious and civic buildings. Avilés celebrates numerous festivals, notably Carnival and the traditional "bollo" bread celebration. Nearby beaches attract visitors to the coastal city, which is now led by Mayor Pilar Valera and enthusiastic about a new cultural center project.
