The automobile transmission system transmits power from the engine to the driving wheels. It includes the clutch, gearbox, propeller shaft, universal joints, rear axle, wheels, and tires. For front-wheel drive vehicles, it also includes additional propeller shafts, universal joints, differentials and rear components. The clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the transmission. It is located between the engine and gearbox. The gearbox allows the engine to operate at optimal speeds for different vehicle speeds. Common gearbox types include sliding mesh, constant mesh, synchromesh, and planetary/epicyclic designs. Additional components that assist in power transmission include the torque converter, overdrive, and freewheel clutch
