John P O'Brien designed new bin cover lids that were constructed using the engineering department's design. The lids were fitted with hydraulic rams to open and close, and a hydraulic pump was purchased and installed to operate the lids. An existing sprinkler system for dust suppression was also updated, incorporating rotating sprinklers in each corner controlled by the original timer. The project involved design, management, electrical, hydraulic, welding, painting and crane operation teams led by John P O'Brien.

Design and fabrication of pneumatic reciprocating water pumping system
This document describes the design and working of a pneumatic reciprocating water pumping system. The system uses a pneumatic cylinder powered by compressed air to pump water with minimal electric power. It consists of a water tank, pneumatic cylinder, solenoid valve and control unit. When the solenoid valve is actuated, the pneumatic cylinder extends and retracts, causing the coupled pumping cylinder to do the same. This sucks water in on the retract stroke and delivers it on the extend stroke, continuously pumping water as needed with little manual effort or electric power required.

They created CAD models and conducted simulations before building a 1” diameter copper pipe with distilled water as the working fluid. Four tests showed improvements as radiator fins and a tighter seal were added. The final test demonstrated effective heat transfer from the evaporator end, through the pipe, and out of the condenser end and radiator fins. While construction challenges arose, the project met its goal of creating a functional small engine cooling heat pipe and provided insights into heat pipe design and principles.

Automated Sand Bin Covers
- 1. Project engineer: John P O’ Brien
- 2. After my design was approved, I sent away the design for professional drafting
- 13. Using the design provided by the engineering department, we constructed 4 new bin cover lids
- 15. Next step was to fit the lid frames with the new rams to ensure perfect fit
- 17. Once satisfied with lid fitting, we completed the sheet work on each lid
- 20. The next stage of our project involved the purchase and installation of the hydraulic pump to operate the opening/closing of the bin covers. The Pump was supplied by Dowden's along with the installation of the stainless steel pipework.
- 22. The sprinkler system is used for dust suppression as an environmental measure. The old system operated on a timer activating hourly for four minutes. It operated by spraying through holes on an old bar running along the bins. The new system would incorporate rotating sprinklers in each corner and would continue to use the old timer as before. This new system proved very successful for dust suppression.
