The aim of this professional Doctor of Creative Industries (DCI) Research Project was to investigate music-making practice and Self as a practitioner in the process of creating and producing a DIY music artifact. Specifically: to investigate why I as the practitioner felt a connection with one form of music-making (acoustic instrument-based), and not a connection with another form of music-making (digital virtual-based). As a phenomenologist, I situated Self into this auto-ethnographic study in the dual roles of researcher and practitioner; developing first-person narratives of my personal journey, critical reflection and reflexive practice. The holistic and multi-dimensional nature of this research has provided rich and nuanced data, illuminating the co-constituted nature of Self, interpreting meaning, and practice. In particular, the research study contextualises contemporary DIY creative practice relative to three interdependent tenets: music & sound-making practice, meaning-making and Self-making, where these tenets are understood in terms of hybridity, agency and subjectivity. CONCEPTS • Human-centred computing~User studies • Applied computing~Sound and music computing

Nowadays developing apps, or any other software requires a smart testing approach. Because of that testers, test leads and any professionals in charge of testing projects have to answers some basic questions before they start. What tools to use? How to automate on different platforms? What’s the smartest way to approach the project? Usually, it means some form of compromise - changing a tool, framework or learning a different approach. What if it was possible not to make compromises, use your skills and tools you know and love? It is. FOB Solutions managed to run one test across simulators, emulators as well as Android and iOS devices using Cucumber and Cify open-source test automation framework. In this how-to webinar, Marko Konsa - Head of Products and Services at FOB Solutions - we will show you how you can build cross-platform, cross-device, cross-application tests. All of that using open source components and how to execute those on a cross device-farm solution. Here are the main takeaways: -Building cross-platform test automation framework -More similar user flows on software built on different platforms -For underlying technologies we chose to use open source components: -Appium -Selenium -Cucumber -Groovy/Java -Gradle -Using cross-platform test automation framework -Behaviour-driven approach - building tests using cucumber -UI types/different screen sizes -Executing cucumber level tests on cross device-farm approach using a Sauce Labs example -Executing same tests on different device farms (Sauce Labs/ TestObject) -Integrating cucumber with Sauce Labs/ TestObject

Whether comparing networks to each other or to random expectation, measuring similarity is essential to understanding the complex phenomena under study. However, there is no canonical way to compare two networks. Having a notion of distance that is built on theoretically robust first principles and that is interpretable with respect to important features of complex networks would allow for a meaningful comparison between different networks. We introduced an efficient new measure of graph distance, based on the marked length spectrum. It compares the structure of two undirected, unweighted graphs by considering the lengths of non-backtracking cycles. We show how this distance relates to structural features such as presence of hubs and triangles through the behavior of the eigenvalues of the non-backtracking matrix, and we showcase its ability to discriminate between networks in both real and synthetic data sets. By taking a topological interpretation of non-backtracking cycles, this work presents a novel homotopical application of topological data analysis to the study of complex networks. This is joint work with Leo Torres and Tina Eliassi-Rad, from Northeastern University.

Museum communication professionals have developed theories and knowledge about museum texts and institutional discourse. However, over the past decades, the digital revolution has brought about deep changes in our behavior with respect to written words in digital support. Such support can be found not only on the web (virtual museums and institutional websites), but also in exhibit facilities, through interactive interfaces, apps, QR Codes and other digital media that form our contemporary exhibits. This requires a change in current writing paradigms toward the best ways to impart knowledge in museums and over the Internet. Therefore, the various players responsible for museum texts (curators, museologists, historians etc.) are now required to master several previously non-existent skills. In this work we want to discuss writing in museums starting from digital support, both for the web and for interactive exhibitors. We created writing guidelines based on new web writing techniques and current demands, without prejudice to the primary functions of a museum. As an example of our reflections, we intend to study the case of the Project “Wise Stones (Pedras Sabidas) Interactive Exhibitors’ Accessible Circuit”, which is a roadmap consisting of accessible digital interfaces, exposed at the Mines and Metal Museum (MM Gerdau) in the City of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This Project received an award from the Ibermuseus Program in 2016. In this work we analyze, therefore, the written production both of the project’s website and of the interactive interfaces’ content, exemplifying, through the Wise Stones Accessible Circuit, that which we define as “exhiwriting” (digital exhibition writing). This is a proposal of web writing principles for museums, encompassing the best writing practices for social media and for the web, without giving up the sophistication and depth required by museum communication, thus fulfilling our museums’ social function.

"Social networks can make a huge impact on business success. Agile transformations can create threats and resistance even with the best intentions when we do not consider how each message is received. In this talk, we will consider how using the SCARF model (status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness and fairness) can guide leaders in their message and create more safety and high performance in the workplace. Agile has claimed high performing teams is critical and we have debates over how to measure high performance but we need to turn our focus from numbers to the social aspects of the workplace? Everyone experiences change in different ways but there are instinctual responses that should be understood and considered so that we create an inviting and positive reaction to the changes we are asking people to make. By understanding how the brain responds to events, you can more effectively remove common barriers managers and their teams face each day. We will talk through how social qualities impact relationships and decisions, how the brain works and how you can relate these to our core agile principles and experience more successful transformations."

On-demand infrastructure services have become a key requirement for developers and DevOps engineers to provision and consume the resources they need. While it can be achieved in public cloud with the support of a rich API ecosystem, there's a lack of common framework across CSP's. As the next-generation Cloud Operating System, Kubernetes provides a variety of services that can be used to reach the same goal, but with a common framework across any type of environment: on-premises, private or public clouds. In this talk, we're going to explore the solutions and patterns available for building end-to-end CI/CD pipelines that include persistent data services.

Automating depency scans using Dependency Check & CycloneDX. CycloneDX: Helps creation of BOM or bill of materials for a software project. This greatly helps organisations or individuals to actually perform software exchanges. Alternately, This bill of materials can be acquired from a different organisation to examine for Open-Source Licenses and vulnerabilities. Dependency-Track supports use of SPDX as a bill of materials alongside the cycloneDX schema 1.0 making acceptability or cross-organisation transport of software material information much more easy. Purl is simply put a common medium to translate dependencies from various software programming languages. The representation is machine as well as human friendly making life of software reviewers and acquires easier. CPE refers to a product and a specific version in a URI Schema. CVE refers to a vulnerability number with score and other details about what in a software component is insecure. CWE refers to a pattern amongst a classification of patterns that deem a specific code section to introduce security weakness. Exploit: Code or input or configuration that can take advantage of a CWE (Weakness). When publicly notified for a CPE (Product with version) it is assigned with a CVE for identification. Intent: When done right in the below steps, it gives a person or group or an organisation the ability to understand a specific software project by software weakness as well as the ability to share the information in a format that can be shared easily or reproduce similar outcomes. 1. Generate BOM (Bill of Materials) - Pre-Build 2. Examine BOM - Post build Why should I care about software dependencies that have security weakness? OWASP has a wonderful page dedicated on this topic at https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Top_10-2017_A9-Using_Components_with_Known_Vulnerabilities CWE: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/categories CPE: https://nvd.nist.gov/products/cpe CVE: https://cve.mitre.org/ SPDX: https://spdx.org CycloneDX: https://cyclonedx.org/ Purl (Package URL) https://github.com/package-url/purl-spec Lastly and most importantly: Dependency-Track https://dependencytrack.org/ https://www.owasp.org/index.php/OWASP_Dependency_Track_Project

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Ever caught yourself nodding along when someone mentions "delivering value" in Agile, but secretly wondering what the heck they actually mean? You're not alone! Join us for an eye-opening session where we'll strip away the buzzwords and dive into the heart of Agile—value delivery. But what is "value"? Is it a mythical unicorn in the world of software development, or is there more to this overused term? This isn't going to be a sit-and-get lecture. We're talking about a face-to-face, interactive meetup where YOU play a crucial role. Come along to: Define It: What does "value" really mean? We’ll build a definition that’s not just words, but a compass for your Agile journey. Contextualise It: Discover what value means specifically to you, your team, your company, and your industry. Because one size does not fit all. Deliver It: Share strategies and gather new ones for uncovering and delivering true value—no more shooting in the dark!

I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
