Recommend Bunn to my friends
ADD THANK YOU’S AND ACKNOWLEDGING WHO HELPED ME
I just want to start with a little story. Last week I was in DC on vacation with my cousin and her family. We went out to eat at a fast food restaurant where, while getting my drink, I had to look at the machine and see what kind it was – obviously and coincidentally, it was made at Bunn. I pointed it out to my cousins family saying – “That tea machine was made in Creston, Iowa.”
Her uncle replied – “Isn’t Creston where you live?”
Me – “Yes, and I am interning at Bunn this summer!”
He thought that was really neat that we were in DC and that machine was made in Creston, IA.
Earlier this Spring I was in California (Cerritos coincidentally) where I spotted another Bunn machine – I was able to tell my teammates that I was interning with Bunn this summer.
So this past couple of months I’ve been to the east and west coast and witnessed Bunn products in both places. I love seeing that logo and I feel proud knowing that it was not only manufactured in Creston, Iowa (where I’m from) but also that I have been fortunate enough to intern here with you guys.
Through this presentation, I will go over my background, the beginning of my internship, the reports and projects I did, and my experiences I learned. Feel free to stop me and ask any questions you may have along the way too!
From Creston and have driven past Bunn for probably15 years – never saw the inside or thought too much about Bunn (I kind of took for granted). I had friends whose parents work at Bunn but again, never thought too much about it other than I knew not to try and drive home at 3:30 when Bunn traffic hit.
Another story before I dig into the knitty gritty of this internship and my experiences.
Some of you might have heard this story, but I’m going to tell it again. I went to my career fair last spring to make connections and look for more internship opportunities closer to home. I came across Bunn’s booth and was surprised to see them there. I was not aware that they would be there and also unaware of the many internship opportunities they had. So I was about to go talk to them when the unexpected happened – the power went out in our building. Well obviously no one was ready for that to happen and I didn’t have much time to wait around for it to come back on because I had a class to make it to so I went ahead and approached their booth anyways. They began by asking me simple questions and explaining to me what they did. Then they said “Our interns are located only in Creston, Iowa it’s about an hour away from here” – and I said “I know, I’m from Creston, that’s my home town!” They asked me my name and we became better acquaintances (in the dark mind you.) I continued the process with Eula and was very pleased to be offered the business intern position here.
Now after working here all summer I have seen much more than just the inside. I have learned how manufacturing works. I have learned the flow of goods and followed all the departments and paper trails.
Spent the first couple of weeks going around and meeting all the managers and supervisors as well as some workers. I followed many departments and understood the flow of parts into and out of the warehouse and parts center. I learned how to complete numerous reports for Wayne and started many projects that I later developed. I was introduced to SAP and how the materials flow through that.
I was given the opportunity as an intern to grow through professional development sessions that involved goal making, behavioral analysis… reading the Question Behind the Question book, interpersonal skills, and the journey
I did a lot of reports during my time here. They include:
Schedule attainment report corproate measures – complete on time produiction order ia01 and ia02
STO – Stock Transfer Order
WM -
My biggest project
I gathered my information and findings and discussed solution ideas along the way with the people impacted as well as with Wayne and Elaine. I came up with a new cart labeling system along with subassembly boxes.
I set up a meeting for Jane and Janet to attend along with a few of their supervisors then pitched my new idea to them which they agreed to and thought it would be helpful.
Within a week I set up boxes with labels and got the process up and going
Ran into problems and had to meet the needs to all my customers (Bill and Dan)
Had a follow up meeting after two weeks to see what needed to be done differently
Kept improving system to make it more efficient and beneficial
Wayne had many papers saved from earlier this year for a project for me to work on. Kathy Larrimore was having to delete TO’s for parts from Murray and having a 006 created to get stock from PC instead of Murray.
Waste of Kathy’s time, and waste of paper and toner.
Organized a meeting in which I had an open table discussion with parts center on how to solve this issue. Discovered that it was an easy solution that Donna Leeps could solve on her end when she puts in the order. After this process, I checked in with Kathy to see the effects and it happened immediately. I did a cost savings analysis which put the savings at $7,000
Rhonda Miller had a project for me to do so I visited with her to get an idea of what she was wanting. She wanted a way to have a dropdown tab on her list of tools so any of her supervisors or employees could look up or add tools to the list. I organized a new excel sheet with another tab and put together directions on how to add tools. I also created a step by step with pictures directions page on how to do the same excel formatting to any spreadsheet so any department could take advantage of this formatting way.
I decided to put together a word document of directions how to do the reports I did for the future interns in hopes it would help them learn faster. I left them printed out in the drawer as well as on the excel report documents.

Pictures of the document directions I put together for future interns
Really went above and beyond my expectations in general – not really any idea of what to expect
I was able to develop myself personally and professionally through my experience at a manufacturing plant.
Thank you
-for giving all of us interns the opportunity to grow and learn with this experience at Bunn
-especially giving me the opportunity to be at home where I love (Creston) and see the impact you have on the community and your employees.
