Redistricting in Texas has been an issue of significant controversy since 2000 ( and even before but not as dramatic and consequential). First read some of the issues involved in 2000 and then read the issues involved in 2010 redistricting controversies including court cases responding to all questions concerning both separate but in many ways very connected cases, incidents and processes.
Redistricting is a highly partisan activity mandated indirectly by the required reapportionment of the constitution every decade. The House of Representatives state member allocations is dependent on an accurate population count and subsequent redistricting. “The primary reason for taking the census is to comply with the U.S. Constitutional mandate for data needed to reapportion the 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. With the census data tapes in hand, states swiftly began to draw a seemingly infinite number of state legislative and congressional district plans to use in the elections.
In 2001-2004 following the 2000 mandated census redistricting in Texas adopted and then re adopted redistricting plans in an unusual manner. Eventually, state legislators adopted plans that were carefully crafted to satisfy a wide range of criteria including compliance with one-person one-vote, the federal Voting Rights Act and traditional redistricting principles such as compact and contiguous districts. In addition, legislators meticulously designed plans to further political goals without violating federal and state statutes. A couple of states, New Jersey and Virginia, had to draw plans for 2001 elections and almost all states had plans in place for the 2002 elections with the exception of Maine and Montana where redistricting is done prior to the 2004 election." (NCLR) However, Texas re drew its districts at least twice. The first redistricting effort was under the direction of the courts and the other instance and latest with a new republican majority in the legislature.
This action of redistricting has been litigated in the Supreme Court (as often Texas legislation and policies are—with many found unconstitutional). The Supreme Court has ruled that much if not most of what Texas enacted during the 2000 decade was in fact constitutional but with one exception also a violation of minority voting rights.
The process with a little less drama repeated itself in 2010 but with different relevant Supreme Court rulings and a new interpretation of the voting rights act. 2010 again was the beginning of a decade in which Texas attempt to redistrict was again found incongruous with minority voting rights.
Discuss, after conducting your own research on the issues involved, that decision and the process in the U.S. Supreme Court. REMEMBER that the decisions and opinions of the Supreme Court change . The case was brought by Mark Janus, a child support specialist who worked for the state government in Illinois. He sued the union, saying he did not agree with its positions and should not be forced to pay fees to support its work. By a 5-to-4 vote, the court ruled that government workers who choose not to join unions may not be required to help pay for collective bargaining. This ruling overruled the court's 1977 decision in Abood v. Detroit Bo.

"Lifting the Corporate Veil" is a legal concept that refers to the judicial act of disregarding the separate legal personality of a corporation or limited liability company (LLC). Normally, a corporation is considered a legal entity separate from its shareholders or members, meaning that the personal assets of shareholders or members are protected from the liabilities of the corporation. However, there are certain situations where courts may decide to "pierce" or "lift" the corporate veil, holding shareholders or members personally liable for the debts or actions of the corporation.
Here are some common scenarios in which courts might lift the corporate veil:
Fraud or Illegality: If shareholders or members use the corporate structure to perpetrate fraud, evade legal obligations, or engage in illegal activities, courts may disregard the corporate entity and hold those individuals personally liable.
Undercapitalization: If a corporation is formed with insufficient capital to conduct its intended business and meet its foreseeable liabilities, and this lack of capitalization results in harm to creditors or other parties, courts may lift the corporate veil to hold shareholders or members liable.
Failure to Observe Corporate Formalities: Corporations and LLCs are required to observe certain formalities, such as holding regular meetings, maintaining separate financial records, and avoiding commingling of personal and corporate assets. If these formalities are not observed and the corporate structure is used as a mere façade, courts may disregard the corporate entity.
Alter Ego: If there is such a unity of interest and ownership between the corporation and its shareholders or members that the separate personalities of the corporation and the individuals no longer exist, courts may treat the corporation as the alter ego of its owners and hold them personally liable.
Group Enterprises: In some cases, where multiple corporations are closely related or form part of a single economic unit, courts may pierce the corporate veil to achieve equity, particularly if one corporation's actions harm creditors or other stakeholders and the corporate structure is being used to shield culpable parties from liability.

In 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs established a committee led by Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, former Vice Chancellor of National Law University (NLU), Delhi. This committee was tasked with reviewing the three codes of criminal law. The primary objective of the committee was to propose comprehensive reforms to the country’s criminal laws in a manner that is both principled and effective.
The committee’s focus was on ensuring the safety and security of individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole. Throughout its deliberations, the committee aimed to uphold constitutional values such as justice, dignity, and the intrinsic value of each individual. Their goal was to recommend amendments to the criminal laws that align with these values and priorities.
Subsequently, in February, the committee successfully submitted its recommendations regarding amendments to the criminal law. These recommendations are intended to serve as a foundation for enhancing the current legal framework, promoting safety and security, and upholding the constitutional principles of justice, dignity, and the inherent worth of every individual.

"Lifting the Corporate Veil" is a legal concept that refers to the judicial act of disregarding the separate legal personality of a corporation or limited liability company (LLC). Normally, a corporation is considered a legal entity separate from its shareholders or members, meaning that the personal assets of shareholders or members are protected from the liabilities of the corporation. However, there are certain situations where courts may decide to "pierce" or "lift" the corporate veil, holding shareholders or members personally liable for the debts or actions of the corporation.
Here are some common scenarios in which courts might lift the corporate veil:
Fraud or Illegality: If shareholders or members use the corporate structure to perpetrate fraud, evade legal obligations, or engage in illegal activities, courts may disregard the corporate entity and hold those individuals personally liable.
Undercapitalization: If a corporation is formed with insufficient capital to conduct its intended business and meet its foreseeable liabilities, and this lack of capitalization results in harm to creditors or other parties, courts may lift the corporate veil to hold shareholders or members liable.
Failure to Observe Corporate Formalities: Corporations and LLCs are required to observe certain formalities, such as holding regular meetings, maintaining separate financial records, and avoiding commingling of personal and corporate assets. If these formalities are not observed and the corporate structure is used as a mere façade, courts may disregard the corporate entity.
Alter Ego: If there is such a unity of interest and ownership between the corporation and its shareholders or members that the separate personalities of the corporation and the individuals no longer exist, courts may treat the corporation as the alter ego of its owners and hold them personally liable.
Group Enterprises: In some cases, where multiple corporations are closely related or form part of a single economic unit, courts may pierce the corporate veil to achieve equity, particularly if one corporation's actions harm creditors or other stakeholders and the corporate structure is being used to shield culpable parties from liability.

- 1. NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ATTORNEY SUES TENNESSEE FOR HARASSMENT AND DECLARATORY JUDGMENT Knoxville, Tennessee -- October 7, 2022 -- Tennessee lawyer Elliott J. Schuchardt has filed a lawsuit against the State of Tennessee, alleging harassment. The complaint alleges that Sandy Garrett, the chief lawyer at the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility, is using conflicts of interest in the court rules to unlawfully harass Schuchardt on political grounds. Between 2017 and 2022, Schuchardt defended a case against two senior federal government employees, located in Knox County. The complaint alleges that Garrett has filed dozens of frivolous claims against Schuchardt, in retaliation for Schuchardt's defense of the case. According to the complaint, several Tennessee attorneys have sued either Garrett or the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility for unlawful political retaliation. For example, attorney David Danner sued the Board for retaliation after Danner published an opinion in the Nashville City Newspaper criticizing Tennessee's system for selecting judges. Attorney Brian Manookian sued the Board for retaliation, after Manookian filed suit against a Tennessee state official. Attorney Yarboro Sallee sued the Board for unlawful retaliation, after she litigated against certain prominent Tennessee politicians. Schuchardt contends that he is also a victim of retaliation. The complaint alleges that Garrett is using conflicts of interest in the present system to engage in political retaliation. A majority of the persons on the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility are lawyers subject to Garrett's review and regulation. Schuchardt alleges in the
- 2. complaint that the attorneys on the Board have an interest in approving Garrett's actions, in order to protect their own licenses to practice law. Schuchardt is asking the court to find the current system unlawful, and require that non- lawyers make up a majority of the persons on the Board. Tennessee adopted a similar system for the regulation of state judges in 2019. Schuchardt is a 1993 graduate of Columbia Law School. Schuchardt has spent much of the last ten years engaging in civil liberties work in the courts. In 2015, he obtained an injunction preventing Sweet Briar College, located in Amherst, Virginia, from closing. Schuchardt has also challenged federal government policies alleging unlawful collection of e- mail. The case is filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, in Nashville.
