Athletics, also known as track and field, originated from ancient Greek athletic competitions involving running, jumping, and throwing. The first recorded organized athletics events were the Ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC in Greece. Athletics competitions were later included in the Panhellenic Games and spread to Rome. The modern era of athletics began in the 19th century with the establishment of national governing bodies and inclusion of athletics in the first modern Olympics in 1896. Major milestones include the formation of the IAAF in 1912, addition of women's events in 1928, introduction of Paralympic athletics in 1960, and transition to professionalism from the 1970s onward.
