The Athene Parthenos was a massive statue of Athena sculpted by Phidias between 447 BC and 438 BC for the Parthenon in Athens. It depicted Athena wearing a helmet and holding a shield with the head of Medusa. The original statue is lost but Roman marble copies give an idea of its appearance. It is considered one of the greatest works of Classical Greek sculpture.
