Question 4

idea that our sun is at the center of the Milky Way galaxy and
correctly estimate the distance between Earth and the Galactic Center
(30,000 ly). He used Radio astronomy to predict the structure and
evolution of our galaxy, and also discovered the place of origin of
most comets.
• Who is X?
BLANK SLIDE
Answer
• Jan Oort
Question 5

Question 7
• Einstein added an extra term in equations of general relativity that
describes the Universe in the situation when it is static. This extra
term was Cosmological Constant. Einstein later called it ‘Biggest
blunder of his life’. Why did he say so?
BLANK SLIDE
Answer
Hubble’s discovery lead to theory of Universe expansion which meant
there was no significance or need of Cosmological Constant.

Question 10
• In 1965 Arno A. Penzias and Robert W. Wilson of Bell Laboratories
were testing a sensitive horn antenna which was designed for
detecting low levels of microwave radiation. They discovered a low
level of microwave background "noise", like the low level of electrical
noise which might produce "snow" on a television screen. After
unsuccessful attempts to eliminate it, they pointed their antenna to
another part of the sky to check whether the "noise" was coming
from space, and got the same kind of signal.
• What was this noise and where did it came from ?
BLANK SLIDE
Hint
Answer
• Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation
It is a residual microwave background radiation left over from the Big
Bang.
Question 11

outside of Jupiter’s orbit. It holds the record for longest period of
naked-eye visibility. Guess the comet.
BLANK SLIDE

Lockyer's account of X, as seen through Newell's large refracting
telescope at Ferndene, Gateshead, and which he described as having a
head like "a fan-shaped projection of light, with ear-like appendages, at
each side, which sympathetically complemented each other at every
change either of form or luminosity." What is X?
