Unlocking Potential Industrial Sectors of Japan in Bangladesh
There is a tie of friendship between Japan and Bangladesh since the independence of Bangladesh in
1971 by the blood bath of the people of the country. Two friends supported each other keeping hand
to hand, being side by side. Japan tried to accumulate global support for the independence of the
country in 1971 whenever Bangladesh helped its friend to mitigate an issue of hijacked Japanese
aircraft in Dhaka on 22 September 1977. Keeping in mind Japan has always supported Bangladesh
from every sphere since the incident. Japanese aids are the main parts of our development in
electricity generation, road & highway, bridge construction, railway, waste management,
embankment and check dam, agriculture, etc. Very recently Metro Rail Project (Dhaka Mass Rapid
Transaction) in Dhaka City is a very vital example of Japanese aids for friendly participation in the
development of the country. Moreover, for the infrastructure development of the country, Japan has
been working from 1972 through JICA by rural government, Roads and Highway, Human Rights,
Female education, Technical education and many other humanitarian wings of the country. However,
there are many sectors in which Japan can still help Bangladesh these are as follows:
1.RMG: RMG is the main item export from Bangladesh to the USA, European Union, China, Australia,
and many other countries of the world. Unfortunately, the infrastructure of the RMG sector of
Bangladesh is not up to the mark to maintain the global standard and compliance as per the provision
of the International Standard Organization (ISO), in which Japan can help Bangladesh by logistic
supports and training creating a quality team for our main exporting sector.
Page | 5
2. Shipbuilding: Bangladesh is also having a shipbuilding capacity but it’s not much yielding with global
standard in which Japan can invest in cargo shipbuilding which is global demand. In a joint venture
project, Bangladesh and Japan can go for a shipbuilding project where Bangladesh will invest
manpower and japan will invest in logistic supports and technologies.
3. Electricity Through Waste Management: From the very recent concept to generate power from
urban waste, Japan can help Bangladesh after the required feasibility study for the same. We have an
abundance of raw materials; we need the technology for this project in which japan can invest.
Page | 6
4.Food Processing: Bangladesh is the country of Summer fruits that are cheap and have global
demand. But we don’t have much scope for processing fruits and to export in the global market. Our
main Summer fruits are juicy, tasty which has a great demand in the Middle East, EU, and even in the
USA. Japan can come forward with its relevant technologies for a processing plant to help the
entrepreneurs of the country. We can increase our export market of vegetables ensuring green
production technology of Japan if Japan gives the logistic support of training for our farmers and the
stakeholders.
5.Dairy Farm: Still the dairy sector of this country is not in a good condition thanks to the
mismanagement of the state’s respective department. On the other hand, quality milk is not available
in this country due to the dishonesty of the farmers and retailers of the dairy sector. Adulteration is a
common phenomenon in this country for which consumers have to pay for their lives. Japan can invest
in this sector to ensure quality milk for the country's people. As Bangladesh is an Agri-based country,
the dairy sector might be a boom with quality management and logistic support. Moreover, exporting
milk may open a door for foreign income in the future.
6.Solar Electricity: Though the Government of Bangladesh is trying its best for the generation of power
with the technological and logistic support of Japan, there is a huge scope of
investment for power generation through the solar panel in the offshore land or islands of the country
where power cable transmission is not possible. It will require a high investment but this sustainable
green production of electricity will help the conservation of the environment of this country, and
people who still lack electricity will get the facility of electricity within a short time.
Page | 7
7. Car Assembling: Japan is skilled in quality car production in the world. Toyota, Yamaha have car
production outlets in Malaysia and Indonesia as labor cost is much lower than Japan. So, Bangladesh
may be the car production or assembling country of Japan to minimize the production cost by ensuring
quality. It will create a win-win situation for both parties. Japan will enjoy less production cost and
Bangladesh will get revenue and scope of employment of the country people.
8. Ikebana: Japan has its crafting over plants and flowers which is well known around the world. If
Japan gives training for our unemployed people for Ikebana, definitely we can earn foreign exchange.
Page | 8
Moreover, there will be new industries based on crafting and floriculture that will increase the job
market of the people of Bangladesh.
9.Tourism & Hospitality Management: Our tourism is a flourishing sector as many people are
interested to move around the countryside’s. But unfortunately, still, there is no required setup,
infrastructure in which Japan can invest. Japan can invest in a river cruise, voyages in the Bay of Bengal,
ecotourism points of the country like Sundarbans, Ratargul, Rangamati lake, Sajek, etc.
10.Water Treatment plant: Though Bangladesh is a land of rivers there is a shortage of pure drinking
water. Some local brands are in a sorry state and not as much as the
standard of ISO which causes serious water-borne diseases. Moreover, somewhat these are
comparatively costlier and not trustworthy. Japan can invest in the water treatment sector to ensure
safe water at a competitive price for the people of Bangladesh which will also serve dual purposes
employments and safe water for the people.
11.Computer & Software: We a reputation for assembling cars, computers, home appliances, etc. for
more than 40 years. Very recently software industry of the country is growing fast. Japan can invest in
the software industry of Bangladesh to add its value as a brand in the world software market.
12.Art & Craft: Bangladesh has a cultural exchange program with Japan by which both the nation has
the scope to share their cultural tools, events, and recreations. It may be extended further to
strengthen the bonding of both nations.
Page | 9
13. Smart Construction & Maintenance: Still the construction sector of the country is less equipped
or in a regretful state. People don’t have the tools and techniques of construction to accelerate the
works in a safe mood. Japan can invest in this sector. Moreover, extend the facilities to face
earthquakes and other digesters scientifically as Japan is a skilled country with this specialty.
14.Education: Japanese education is a global brand. Japan can facilitate more students’ scholarships
in Japan to uplift the education sector of this country. Furthermore, Japan Bangladesh friendship
University may be opened in Bangladesh for the quality education of the country.
15. Healthcare Sector: Our health sector is not standard much which is costly with some unethical
practices. Though there is some treatment and hospitals name of Japan treatment is running by the
local authorities which is costly and not under much good management. Japan can handle all the issues
Page | 10
to maximize the service for the people of this country. Moreover, more hospitals may be set up for
quality treatment and to save money people are spending outside of the country.
16.Robotics: In robotics Technology, Japan is the best of others. Japan can invest in this sector to
automate and expedite the production and quality sector of the country which is not possible by men
for partiality and dishonesty in the present context. One of our RMG factories, the Envoy Group has
brought 400 Robots for the production of denim fabric which is a success story for the inspiration of
other entrepreneurs of this sector.
Conclusion: Japan is a country of skills, human resources, motivations, and for what not?
Unfortunately, this country has no natural resources like ours. With the tremendous efforts and
motivational power true leader in the driving seat, japan is the superpower of assets and unparallel in
development within a short time. Moreover, I think Japan is the country where some fundamental
thoughts of economics and their platforms have been developed. Abenomics is the right example for
this statement. However, making Japan an Idle for development will not be unwise. We hope Japan
will be always on our side with its tremendous supports for the development of the country to SDGs
(Sustainable Development Goals) and MDGs (Millennium Development Goals).
