Assignment: Human Rights Peacebuilding can be successful only when human rights are protected. In 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration includes 30 articles, and each article details a unique human right, such as the right to nationality, the right to education, and the right to life, liberty, and security of person. Despite the Declaration, human rights are not always protected before, during, or after conflict. To prepare for this assignment: Review Chapter 3 in your course text, The Little Book of Strategic Peacebuilding . Pay particular attention to the information on human needs and human rights. Review the article, "What Human Rights Are," and note the definition of human rights. Review the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights," and focus on the details of each human right. Review the article, "China: Tiananmen's Unhealed Wounds" and think about how human rights violations can contribute to conflict. Select a conflict, current or historical, that involves (or involved) a human rights issue(s) or violation(s).* Reflect on why and how the human right(s) or violation(s) contributed to or otherwise played a role in the conflict. Consider why human rights are essential for peace. * The Optional Resources can assist you in selecting a conflict. You also may select one with which you are familiar or one you discover through research on your own. The assignment: 2 pages Briefly describe the conflict that you selected and the human rights issue(s) or violation(s) involved in the conflict. Explain why and how the human rights issue(s) or violation(s) contributes (or contributed) to this conflict. Using this example, explain why human rights are essential for peace. Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the Learning Resources for this course. .

Religious doctrine, philosophy, law, and more formalized human rights initiatives influence how people interpret social justice. While early interpretations of social justice included concepts of fairness and dignity, what constitutes social justice today remains a source of debate. Basic freedoms that are considered keystones of human rights and social justice in one region may be considered only a privilege in another. Natural Rights, Civil Rights, Human Rights
So far, in this unit of the course, the notion of
“rights” has come up several times. Both Hobbes,
Locke, and Mills discuss rights in some way.
As you may recall, Hobbes defines right as a type of
liberty, the freedom to do something without
impediment. Both Hobbes and Locke believe that
humans have natural rights, that is inherent
freedoms that they are endowed with by nature. In
other words, because humans and the world are
they way they are, humans come with pre-given
rights. For Hobbes the principle right held by
humans was to do whatever it takes to survive. For
Locke it was to defend one’s property (including
one’s life).
For Hobbes, when humans enter a social contract
and form a government with laws, they give up
their natural rights. For Locke, the institution of
government provides a way of guaranteeing one’s
natural rights by codifying those rights into law. When
a sovereign power establishes rights for its citizens
and laws for protecting those rights, we get civil
rights.
Natural rights apply in the state of nature while civil
rights apply in civilization. Human rights refer to
those rights which humans hold simply because they
are human. Such rights are closer in kind to natural
rights, but are often reflected in civil rights.
The notion of human rights gets invoked frequently in
discussions of violations of human dignity and ethics.
But where do human rights come from? Are they
real? Who guarantees them? How effective are
they in protecting vulnerable people? Do
other-than-human beings have rights, too?
Amartya Sen, 1933 -
Sen was born in West Bengal India in 1933. He
received is B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Economics at
Trinity College in Cambridge, England. His research
has included topics such as social choice theory,
economic theory, ethics and political philosophy,
welfare economics, theory of measurement,
decision theory, development economics, public
health, and gender studies. His interest in global
welfare and human rights was partly inspired by his
experience of witnessing famine in India.
Sen has served on various economic advisory
boards including the American Economic
Association. He has also received numerous awards
for his work, the most prestigious of which was the
Nobel Prize in economics.
Sen currently teaches at Harvard University.

INTRODUCTION
W HEN governments and international agencies talk about peo-
ple's basic political and economic entitlements, they regularly
use the language of rights. When constitutions are written in the mod-
em era, and their framers wish to identify a group of particularly ur-
gent interests that deserve special protection, once again it is the
language of rights that is regularly preferred.
The language of rights has a moral resonance that makes it hard to
avoid in contemporary political discourse. But it is certainly not on
account of its theoretical and conceptual clarity that it has been pre-
ferred. There are many different ways of thinking about what a right
is, and many different definitions of "human rights."' For example,
rights are often spoken of as entitlements that belong to all human
beings simply because they are human, or as especially urgent inter-
ests of human beings as human beings that deserve protection regard-
less of where people are situated.2 Within this tradition there are
differences. The dominant tradition has typically grounded rights in
the possession of rationality and language, thus implying that non-
human animals do not have them, and that mentally impaired humans
may not have them.3 Some philosophers have maintained that senti-
ence, instead, should be the basis of rights; thus, all animals would be
rights-bearers.4 In contrast to this entire group of natural-rights theo-
rists, there are also thinkers who treat all rights as artifacts of state
action.5 The latter position would seem to imply that there are no

Defining Universal Human Rights
Many classic documents guide and reinforce human rights laws, policies, and practices around the world. The first document to address global human rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, emerged in the aftermath of atrocities committed during World War II. Many nations adopted its protocols after it was endorsed by the United Nations in December 1948. It continues today, as the basis for the development of international treaties, national laws, and global institutions that protect and promote human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other classic documents that attempt to define universal human rights are products of Western culture. As such, they are subject to scrutiny for Western bias. For example, Western ideals such as freedom of speech may be promoted in the Western world as an absolute right but firmly rejected in non-Western nations as frivolous and non- essential. The question of which human rights documents are universally applicable is also a subject of considerable debate.

Thomas Paine wrote the pamphlet Common Sense to convince American colonists to support
the idea of independence. You should now understand the relationship between political
principles and the Declaration of Independence. Use the information you learned in the lesson
to create your own modern day Common Sense pamphlet that explains how the Declaration
of Independence upholds the principles of popular sovereignty, social contract, and natural
and individual rights.
Steps
1. Use this Pamphlet Template or a Web 2.0 tool to create your six-panel pamphlet.
2. There are many 21st century tools available for creating and submitting your work
in the online environment. For more information on the tools your school uses,
contact your teacher or visit the Web 2.0 tools area of your course.
3. The first panel should be the title panel. Include your name, date, instructor, and a title for
the pamphlet.
4. On the second panel, write a one-paragraph overview of the Declaration of
Independence. Be sure to describe its purpose and how the document is structured.
5. On panels three, four, and five, you will explain the principles of popular sovereignty,
social contract, and natural and individual rights. Each panel should include a well-written
paragraph that explains how the Declaration of Independence reflects a principle. Use at
least one quote from the Declaration of Independence that illustrates the principle, for
each of these panels (three quotes total). For example, if you chose to focus on the
principle of popular sovereignty for panel three in your pamphlet, then that panel will
include a quote from the Declaration of Independence that illustrates the principle of
popular sovereignty and one well-written paragraph that explains how the Declaration of

Does banning abortion infringe on women’s rights?
Part 2: Introduction
Roe v. Wade was the 1973 landmark case in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled and
secured a woman’s right to abortion. However, this right that was given to women is now being
infringed. Kanyoro and Hessini (2017) wrote that today, “…women’s sexual and reproductive
rights, including the right to safe, legal and affordable abortion are being attacked and rolled
back by those in position of power.” Currently, positions have been in negotiations on abolishing
a woman’s right to abortion. As this argument continues to rise, many are choosing sides on this
argument, the sides of being pro-choice or pro-life.
Someone who is pro-life “…believes that the government has an obligation to preserve
all human life, regardless of intent, viability, or quality-of-life concerns…”, whereas someone
who is pro-choice “…believes that individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their
own reproduction systems, as long as they don’t breach the autonomy of others…” (Head, 2019).
Moreover, the conflict between pro-life v. pro-choice arises on the issue of abortion. According
to our textbook, the U.S. remains divided on the moral decision/support of abortion, in fact, “…
results show that 47% of those surveyed identified as pro-choice, and 46% as pro-life… (Saad,
2016)” (Thames, 2018, Ch. 6). This paper will dig deeper and showcase the applied morals and
ethics on both sides of the argument in support of the legalization on abortion in respect to
women’s rights, or the banning of abortion in support of preserving all human life.

Last week, you established that human rights are those to which all people are entitled. This idea may seem simple and straightforward; but the question remains as to how and when specific human rights are universally applied. The "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" (UDHR) identifies five core notions, or concepts of basic human rights. Universal rights tend to be flexible and evolve as the social and political landscape changes. For this week’s forum post, We discuss the three major approaches surrounding collection and analysis of data. The first of the three approaches are quantitative. Quantitative, represents the method of utilizing numeric data and statistics in communicating the results. The second of the three approaches are qualitative. Qualitative represents the method of gathering data in the form of words and descriptions, such as interviews and focus groups, to communicate the results. The third, and final approach surrounding collection and analysis of data is mixed methods. Mixed methods incorporate both of what the quantitative and qualitative approach focus on. Using both numeric data and personal communication (Todd, Nerlich, McKeown, Clarke, p.2,3)
Quantitative
The quantitative method, involves numeric data and statistics to communicate findings. It emphasizes data, measured objectively, because it cannot be disputed. Polls, questionnaires, and surveys are three methods used in the collection of statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data. The primary purpose of quantitative research is to explain a particular event. By gathering a specific type of data, and generalizing it across an area small or wide. The goal, is to determine the relationships between variables, in that given area. Typically, this type of research is used to create graphs and tables of raw data. (Todd, Nerlich, McKeown, Clarke, p.2,3). This method would involve survey and ethnographic, because both are products of statistical analysis.
Qualitative
The qualitative method, involves gathering data in the form of words and descriptions. It emphasizes to understand the social reality of a given group and cultures as nearly as possible as its participants feel it or live it. The study is conducted in the person or groups natural setting. The goal of the qualitative approach is to understand the “why” behind a particular phenomenon, or behavior, acts the way it does. (Saul McLeon, p.1,2)
This method would involve narrative and case study, because both of those studies involve personal data. Data that is received in the form of words.
Mixed Method
The mixed method, combines both of the approaches, that the quantitative and qualitative method focus on. It emphasizes the collection, analysis, and integrating quantitative and qualitative research. The issue with both qualitative and quantitative research, is that there are weaknesses to only using one method at a time. Mix.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. In 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration includes 30 articles, and each article details a unique human right, such as the right to nationality, the right to education, and the right to life, liberty, and security of person. Despite the Declaration, human rights are not always protected before, during, or after conflict. To prepare for this assignment: Review Chapter 3 in your course text, The Little Book of Strategic Peacebuilding . Pay particular attention to the information on human needs and human rights. Review the article, "What Human Rights Are," and note the definition of human rights. Review the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights," and focus on the details of each human right. Review the article, "China: Tiananmen's Unhealed Wounds" and think about how human rights violations can contribute to conflict. Select a conflict, current or historical, that involves (or involved) a human rights issue(s) or violation(s).* Reflect on why and how the human right(s) or violation(s) contributed to or otherwise played a role in the conflict.
- 2. Consider why human rights are essential for peace. * The Optional Resources can assist you in selecting a conflict. You also may select one with which you are familiar or one you discover through research on your own. The assignment: 2 pages Briefly describe the conflict that you selected and the human rights issue(s) or violation(s) involved in the conflict.
