Assignment no. 3
How business ideas are generated for intrapreneurial and
entrepreneurial opportunities through brainstorming
Definition:- Brainstorming is a process in which an individual
or a group is encouraged to think for giving number of
solutions for a problem.
It combines a relaxed, informal approach to problem solving
with lateral thinking.
It encourages people to come up with thoughts and ideas that
can, at first, seem a bit crazy.
Some of these ideas can be crafted into original, creative
solutions to a problem, while others can spark even more
ideas. This helps to get people unstuck by "jolting" them out
of their normal ways of thinking.
Types of Brainstorming
Individual brainstorming
Group brainstorming
Individual brainstorming
When you brainstorm on your own you don’t
have to worry about other people’s egos or
opinions, and you can be free and more creative.
For individual brainstorming, choose a
comfortable place to sit and think.
Minimize distractions, focus on the problem at
hand, using mind maps to arrange and develop
ideas.
Group brainstorming
In group brainstorming people from a wide range
of disciplines and different thinking style come
together for a debate and idea generation.
There is an advantage of full experience and
creativity of all team members.
When one member gets stuck with an idea ,
another members creativity and experience can
take ideas to the next stage.
Steps for effective conduct of Group
brainstorming
 Prepare the group
 Present the problem
 Guide the discussion
 Analyze the ideas

activity.
Provides valuable feedback information to
resource person.
Difference between invention and innovation:-
It is expected that the net outcome of brainstorming session should be
innovative ideas. So let us first understand the clear difference between
invention and innovation.
Invention:- Invention is the creation of new products, processes, and
technologies not previously known to exist.
Innovation:- Innovation is the transformation of an invention into useful
applications by combining resources in new or unusual ways to provide
value to society through improved products, technology, or services.
Invention Innovation
X ray Medical X ray machines
Light sensitivity of silver compounds Photography and Camera
Semi conductors Radio, Televisions
Storage of data on magnetic surfaces Magnetic tapes, cassettes, diskettes
LASER CD, DVD
E=mc^2 Nuclear power
SCAMPER Technique for innovative ideas:-
Creativity and innovativeness are the important traits of an entrepreneur.
So during the brainstorming session of either alone or inside a group,
forcing the mind to think in a specific flow can help emerging innovative
ideas that won’t be possible to reach using a regular thinking flow. The
SCAMPER is one of the idea generation technique which aims to provide
seven different thinking approaches to find innovative ideas and
solutions.
SCAMPER is an acronym with each letter standing for an action verb
which in turn stands for a prompt for creative ideas.
S – Substitute
C – Combine
A – Adapt
M – Modify
P – Put to another use
E – Eliminate
R – Reverse
SCAMPER is an acronym and you ask the following types of question when
you use this tool:
Substitute: What elements of this product or service can we substitute?
Combine: How can we combine this with other products or services?
Adapt: What idea from elsewhere can we alter or adapt?
Maximize or minimize: How can we greatly enlarge or greatly reduce any
component?
Put to other use: What completely different use can we have for our
product?
Eliminate: What elements of the product or service can be eliminated?
Rearrange or reverse: How can we rearrange the product or reverse the
process?
Here are some examples of how the SCAMPER verbs work for innovation:
Substitute:- If you were making spectacles then you could substitute plastic
lenses for glass (incremental innovation) or you could substitute contact
lenses for spectacles (radical innovation).
Combine:- A mobile phone was combined with a camera and then an MP3
player.
Adapt:- The roll-on deodorant was an idea adapted from the ballpoint pen.
Modify (Maximize or Minimise):- Restaurants that offer all you can eat have
maximized their proposition (offers).
A low cost airline like Ryanair has minimized many elements of service.
Put to other use:- De Beers put industrial diamonds to other use when they
launched engagement rings.
Eliminate:- Dell Computers and Amazon eliminated the intermediary.
Rearrange or Reverse:- McDonalds rearranged the restaurant by getting
customers to pay first and then eat.
