Basketball began with its invention in 1891
in Springfield, Massachusetts, by Canadian
physical education instructor James Naismith as a
less injury-prone sport than football. Naismith was
a 31-year old graduate student when he created
the indoor sport to keep athletes indoors during the
winters.[1] The game became established fairly
quickly and grew very popular as the 20th century
progressed, first in America and then in other parts
of the world. After basketball became established in
American colleges, the professional game followed.
The American National Basketball
Association (NBA), established in 1946, grew to a
multibillion-dollar enterprise by the end of the
century, and basketball became an integral part of

HOW TO PLAY • Only five players per team on the court. • Score more than your opponent to win. • Score within the shot clock. • Dribbling advances the ball. • The offense has five seconds to inbound the ball. • The offense must advance the ball. • Defenders can’t interfere with a shot on a downward trajectory. • Defenders can legally block or steal the ball.

FOULS PERSONAL FOUL • Pushing — Contact that displaces an opponent. • Illegal use of hands — Extending the hands outside the cylinder and causing illegal contact • Illegal use of legs or knees (on the dunk): Jumping up with one knee forward as to intentionally hit the defender. TECHNICAL FOUL • Allowing players to lock arms in order to restrict the movement of an opponent. • Illegal substitution or entering the game at an impermissible time • Lifting or jumping onto a teammate to gain a height advantage • • Pushing — Contact that displaces an opponent. • Illegal use of hands — Extending the hands outside the cylinder and causing illegal contact • Illegal use of legs or knees (on the dunk): Jumping up with one knee forward as to intentionally hit the defender.

TERMINOLOGY Airball A shot attempt that was off the mark and didn't touch the basket or the backboard Alley-oop A play where a teammate throws the ball high towards the basket and their teammate jumps up, catches the ball, and then slams it into the hoop. Box Out Positioning yourself between the basket and your opponent as a way to obtain a rebound.
