Team Leader – Acid Engineering Services

Supervisor: Barry Hlidek, P.Eng
General Technical Services for Oil/Gas Well Completions
 Development of treatment proposals
o Take well information provided by clients and prepare technical proposals
for both the clients and our field crews on location.
o Research treatment types, histories, schedules and pumped job data to design
acid and acid fracture treatments.
o Discuss production problems and issues with clients and develop an
appropriate remedial treatment.
o Account for operational and safety issues based on treatment type and
design.
 On-call responsibilities to clients and field personnel.
o Provide job background, information, and theory to clients and field
personnel 24 hours a day.
o Problem solving of treatment issues involving equipment, safety and
operations. Making pumping decisions for crews on location when
problems arise.
 Engineering Calculations
o Fluid volumes based on various well configurations.
o Fluid friction calculations.
o Hydrostatic pressures of columns of fluids.
o Bottom hole treating pressures requirements.
o Nitrogen calculations for nitrified Acid treatments, including feedrate and
displacement volumes.
 Customer Interaction
o Work closely with production and completion engineers and BJ sales
representatives in treatment design.
o Optimize treatment design by applying experience and treatment history for
the client.
o Inform clients of new treatment techniques and problems that may arise
based on treatment design.
o Connect with field crews via satellite to monitor treatments as they are
pumped. This allows us to make recommendations and changes to the
treatment as it progresses based on actual treatment conditions.
o Taking production data from the clients and applying successes and
shortcomings to future treatment design.
o Providing clients with detailed treatment summaries on jobs completed.
This includes treatment charts outlining treating pressures and rates.
o Leasing between lab and customer on testing and chemical information,
Acidizing Technical Services for Oil/Gas Well Completions
 Design of remedial acid treatments for oil, gas and injection wells. This involves:
o Researching production data for the well and various off-setting well
locations.
o Researching the mineralogy of the formation that is being treated to ensure
that no adverse reactions or precipitations can occur with our acid packages.
o Analysis of logs provided for the formation to be treated. Researching
things such as formation permeability, porosity, water saturation, rock
stresses and other reservoir properties that will affect the treatment.
 Acid Blend design
o Review reservoir properties and mineralogy to design a compatible acid
blend for different types of treatments.
o Understand Acid chemistry, reactions and additive interactions.
 Develop testing criteria for different acid treatment types including corrosion
testing, compatibility of acid package with representative oil samples and sludge
tests on oil/acid samples before and after the reaction occurs.
 Teaching Acidizing Techniques and Acid Types to clients at BJ Services annual
customer School.
o Develop a presentation outlining the theory behind different acid treatments,
methods of removing damage to the reservoir and improve the production
capabilities of the reservoir.
o Outline the different acids used in Oilfield Acidizing, the reactions of these
acids and by-products created in the reactions.
o Answer any specific case or general questions clients have about Acidizing.
Acid Fracture Technical Services for Oil/Gas Well Completions
 Fracture Treatment design. This involves creating treatment schedules, calculating
fluid volumes and equipment required based on each specific well location and
configuration.
 Fracture Modelling
o Input reservoir data and treatment details to provide an optimized treatment
design based on these inputs.
o Model various fracture treatments using GoWin software.
o Optimization of treatments based on numerous different simulations varying
treatment sizes and rates.
o Provide detailed technical reports on the simulations and recommendations
to the clients.
o Meet with and discuss treatment options with production and completion
engineers based on modelling.
Supervisory Duties.
 Daily supervision of two Junior Engineers.
o Every day assistance and training in all aspects of Acid Engineering,
including, engineering tools, job design, well completions, treatment theory
and research techniques.
o 24 hour on call support, when they are on call.
o Proof reading proposals generated by Acid Engineering group.
o Performance evaluation of Acid Engineering staff.
o Scheduling staff training and vacation time.
o Career mentoring.
 Assistance to other Engineering groups on all aspects of acid treatments.
 Budgeting for the Acid Engineering group.
