INT. ICT ROOM. DAY
Students are typing in personal statements, organising UCAS points and
searching for university courses. The sound of keyboard typing and
mouse clicking gets louder and louder.
INT. CAREERS COUNSELOR’S OFFICE. DAY
MISS JEAN places a pile of pamphlets and printed out documents in
front of HARPER. The pile of paper makes a loud noise as it hits the
desk. HARPER looks down at the pile of paper, uninterested. HARPER
then looks back up to face MISS JEAN who has a wide smile across her
face.
MISS JEAN
(enthusiastically)
Well! It’s been a nice year, right? You must’ve worked hard for those
grades. 5 Bs and 3 Cs! That’s just above..average! How good is that?
MISS JEAN tries to grab HARPER’s attention by being enthusiastic. MISS
JEAN makes rapid hand movements, and continues talking about career
options, but her voice is muffled into the background.
HARPER (V.O.)
It has to be around..now.
The clock strikes 5 O’clock. HARPER glances at the clock for a moment,
then looks down at her hand. The words ‘5 O’clock, don’t forget’ are
written in black marker on the palm of her hand. She rubs on the words
with her right thumb, which makes the words blurry. HARPER looks out
the window with a worried expression on.
HARPER (V.O.)
Should I tell her? No, wait. I should tell her, right? Should I?
MISS JEAN writes a sentence on a small whiteboard. The board marker
makes a squeaky noise, HARPER winces at the sound. MISS JEAN faces
HARPER, who seems to be spacing out, not paying attention.
MISS JEAN
(aggressively)
-now that, is an option you might want to take notes on, and this!
Seems like a great choice, and also... You’re not even listening to me
anymore, are you?
HARPER snaps up her head towards MISS JEAN’s direction.
HARPER (V.O.)
Did she say something? Was it a question?
MISS JEAN’s face falls, her eyes filled with disappointment and worry.
HARPER glances down at her notebook which is filled with pen doodles
and scribbles. She fiddles with her fingers and then bites her lips. A
few of the scribbled sentences include ‘this is taking forever’, ‘I
wanna go home’, ‘She’s gonna kill me if I’m late’ and ‘do people ever
know when to shut up?’
HARPER
(muttering under her breath)
I couldn’t get much sleep yesterday.
MISS JEAN
(tired and annoyed)
We all did, Harper. We all did. Do you think I usually get home, have
a good afternoon rest and then go to bed at 7pm?
MISS JEAN sighs out loud and slumps into her chair. The stationary on
her desk shifts a bit from the impact.
MISS JEAN
You know what? Just leave. It’s not like I didn’t see that tiny note
written on your hand.
HARPER stares at MISS JEAN for a moment, stunned. HARPER quickly
covers the note by turning over her hand.
HARPER (V.O.)
No, no..no. She doesn’t know everything. Calm down Harper, don’t say
anything stupid, she doesn’t need to know, keep it cool.
She opens her mouth to say something, then quickly closes it, unsure
what her question actually is.
MISS JEAN
Go ahead. If I were you, I wouldn’t want to be late to such an event.
HARPER (V.O.)
Crap, she knows.
HARPER continues to look at MISS JEAN, then turns her head towards the
door. HARPER hesitantly takes her belongings and shoves them into her
backpack. She hastily gets up her chair, pushes her chair into her
desk and walks towards the door. She opens the door slightly, looks
back at MISS JEAN briefly with her hand still on the handle. MISS JEAN
continues to watch HARPER with an expression unable to read.
HARPER
(mutters to herself)
...Bye, Miss.
HARPER then turns back to the door and heads out. The door slams shut
and MISS JEAN looks at the closed door with a concerned expression.
The clock shows the time, 5:07.
