So far in our series we've seen the theme of the Kingdom of God is one that runs through the entire story of the Bible and that the kingdom is something other than what we would expect of a worldly kingdom. Today we are going to see just how it is that Jesus came to be the king of this kingdom.
3. 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the
wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After
fasting forty days and forty nights, he was
hungry.
Matthew 4 :1–2
4. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are
the Son of God, tell these stones to become
bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man
shall not live on bread alone, but on every
word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Matthew 4 :3–4
5. 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and
had him stand on the highest point of the
temple.
Matthew 4 :5
6. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw
yourself down. For it is written: “ ‘He will
command his angels concerning you, and they
will lift you up in their hands, so that you
will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
Matthew 4 :6
7. 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do
not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8
Again, the devil took him to a very high
mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of
the world and their splendor.
Matthew 4 :7–8
8. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you
will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said
to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written:
‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him
only.’”
Matthew 4 :9–10
9. 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest
said to him, “I charge you under oath by the
living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the
Son of God.”
Matthew 26:63
10. 64 “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say
to all of you: From now on you will see the Son
of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty
One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Matthew 26:64
11. 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and
said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need
any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard
the blasphemy.
Matthew 26:65
12. 66 What do you think?” “He is worthy of death,”
they answered. 67 Then they spit in his face and
struck him with their fists. Others slapped him

you?”

and the governor asked him, “Are you the king
of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

the Praetorium and gathered the whole company
of soldiers around him.

16. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on
him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of
thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff
in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of
him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!”
they said.
Matthew 27:28–29
17. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and
struck him on the head again and again. 31
After they had mocked him, they took off the
robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they
led him away to crucify him.

20. 5 In your relationships with one another, have
the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being
in very nature God, did not consider equality
with God something to be used to his own
advantage;
Philippians 2:5–6
21. 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the
very nature of a servant, being made in human
likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a
man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient
to death— even death on a cross!
Philippians 2:7–8
22. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he
humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted
him to the highest place and gave him the name
that is above every name,
Philippians 2:8–9
23. 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, in heaven and on earth and under the
earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the
Father.
Philippians 2:10–11
