2. MY PRODUCT
Our AS video ‘An Awakening’ is a two-minute
opening sequence to a feature length horror film.
During the planning and production of this piece,
we first had to conduct extensive research in to
previous productions of a similar nature, and decide
whether to conform to main horror conventions, or
contradict them with a more contemporary horror
piece. This was an important decision, as
challenging given stereotypes of horror films was
potentially a big risk in the success of my product.
We decided it was important to feature similar
motifs and conventions as real media products in
order to retain a sense of professionalism, but in
certain key areas, a contradiction would be effective
to convey the originality of our film.
3. SIMILAR MEDIA PRODUCTS
To make a horror opening sequence to the standard of
real media products already released, similar conventions
had to be attained to. Motifs such as the typical horror
score and locations were important in the production, as
the opening sequence is key in establishing the narrative
of a film. I believe the use of general horror stereotypes is
effective in forming the basis of a good horror film, and
our opening sequence does so. To learn the skills for my
product, We took inspiration from the horror classic, ‘The
Blair Witch Project’. In this film, three amateur film
makers enter the woods, never to return. I believe this is
synonymous with my product
4. REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS
After researching ‘The Blair Witch Project’, we
began to discover a whole branch of horror
films which strongly related to our product.
Films such as ‘Cabin Fever’, and ‘The Texas
Chainsaw Massacre’. We decided that any
serious contradictions and challenges of real
media products could be detrimental to the
success of our video, and thus decided to base
our product on these films.
5. ‘AN AWAKENING’
After research and planning, we undertook the production of
our media piece. Using key conventions, including location,
score, and typical characters, we created a two-minute
opening narrative, picturing a young girl taking a shortcut
home through the woods, to find her path blocked by a killer.
The girl is pursued, to the point of her death. This short clip,
I believe, is effective in both building the tension for the rest
of the feature length production, and establishing a strong
narrative, with obvious horror film features. After editing and
completion of production, I believe our piece has been
successful in using stereotypes from real media products,
and maintaining a sense of professionalism, without falling
in to the trap of copying other media products.
