2. This is an instillation by the brilliant artist
Diana Al-Hadid. Diana created many
instillations such as this one with purposes of
creating a story that is also seen as
ambiguous. In the art 21 video, Diana says
that her art isn't one decision but rather a lot
of interwoven and fluctuating decisions. She
also discusses how in her art it looks like it is
dripping or still moving. Diana creates images
on a certain canvas on the wall before she
peels it away and suspends it so that it
becomes an object.

11x14 canvas
I created this piece by simply gluing down
crayons and using a hot tool to melt them
down on my canvas. Diana Al-Hadid’s artwork
inspired me to create this for a couple of
reasons. When I first saw Diana’s art 21 video
and saw pictures of her art instillations I
immediately saw a commonality in all of her
artwork. She lets her paint drip down near the
end of her canvas to make it look like the art is
in motion and in my response artwork I wanted
to capture this dripping design and I used
several different crayons to get that fluctuating
interwoven design that is seen throughout
Diana’s work.
4. Kara Walker - "Untitled (Hunting Scenes)," 2001
Cut paper and adhesive on wall

Collection of Centro Nazionale per le Arti Contemporanea,
Rome, Italy
Kara Walker is an artist who is
known for her bold silhouette
figures that are usually placed
directly on the walls of galleries.
Kara works to capture scenes of
conflict and create them in a
theatrical way. In this scene
there are “white sitters” and a
slave. The artist also utilizes
strong light to cast shadows on
her art to make it seem like the
viewer’s shadow is mingling
with the people in her artwork.

In response to Kara Walker’s art, I painted
this tree in black paint on a white canvas.
What really stood out to me was the bold,
black silhouettes in the artist’s work. I like
how minimalistic yet powerful Walker’s
pieces can be and I painted this tree in an
effort to mimic the style of Kara’s art,
although the process and ideas where
different.
6. Daniel Gordon
One Star Press, Fruits et Riche Vaisselle Sur Une
Table
1640-2015
Daniel Gordon is an artist
who uses a lot of cut out
images and paper in color
to create images that are a
little abstract. In almost all
of his artwork on the art 21
website, there are bold and
bright colors incorporated
and some even appear to
be 3D. In these images, the
vases are actually made out
of paper and placed on the
colorful background.

I created this in response to Daniel
Gordon’s art display because of the
simple elements he used to make his art
standout. I like how the artist chooses
bright background colors that contrast
against the bright color of the object in
the painting to make it pop. I was trying
to follow the style of Daniel’s work by
doing this and making one object be the
sole focal point and really stand out.
