Nathan Szewczyk observed several stores at a local mall on a rainy Thursday afternoon. He summarized his observations of JC Penney, Sports Authority, Von Maur, and Carson Pirie Scott. At JC Penney, he noted the plain entrance, colorful mannequins on display, and basic fluorescent lighting. His observations of Sports Authority included colorful displays, athletic mannequin poses, and signs advertising store discounts. Von Maur had a grand entrance, prices that were not advertised, and a high-end, expensive feel. Finally, at Carson Pirie Scott the entrance was clearly labeled and the perfume smell was overwhelming on the top floor where cosmetics and narrow aisles forced customers together.
