ARDUINO-BASED GAS LEAKAGE D
ETECTOR
• Gas leaks can pose serious dangers in homes and small
setups.
• This project uses an MQ-5 gas sensor with Arduino Uno to
detect leaks.
• It triggers a buzzer and an LED as alerts when gas is
present.
• A beginner-friendly, low-cost safety solution.
WHATYOU NEED &
HOW IT IS CONNECTED
Components:
• Arduino Uno
• MQ-5 Gas Sensor
• Buzzer, LED, 220 Resistor
Ω
• Breadboard, Jumper Wires, Power Source
Circuit Connections:
• MQ-5 A2 (Gas Input)
→
• LED A1 (Visual Alert)
→
• Buzzer A0 (Sound Alert)
→
• Power: 7.2V Battery ArduinoVin
→
HOW THE CODE WORKS
Pin Configuration:
• A2 MQ-5 Sensor
→
• A1 LED
→
• A0 Buzzer
→
Code Flow:
• Read analog value from MQ-5
• If gas detected (LOW): LED & Buzzer ON,
print alert
• Else: LED & Buzzer OFF, print normal
• Add delay to avoid false triggering
HOW ITWORKS IN REAL LIFE
Demo Steps:
• Upload code to Arduino
• Tune sensor using potentiometer
• Simulate gas using a lighter (unlit)
• Buzzer & LED activate when gas is
detected
• Alerts stop once gas clears
Tuning Tip:Adjust potentiometer until
onboard LED responds correctly.
WHERE CANYOU USE THIS
PROJECT?
• Home Kitchens – Detect LPG leaks
• Restaurants & FoodTrucks – Compact safety monitor
• Warehouses – Basic leak detection
• STEM Projects – Perfect for electronics learners
• RVs & Camping – Portable gas detection
• Labs &Workshops – Backup gas safety tool
COMMON QUESTIONS
ANSWERED
❓ Can I use other gas sensors? Yes – MQ-2, MQ-6, etc.
❓ Is it accurate? Good for general use, not industrial.
❓ Sensor lifespan? 2–5 years with proper handling.
🔧 Tip:Warm up the MQ-5 for ~24 hrs for stable readings.
WRAP-UP &
FUTURE IDEAS
