Dear Friend,
By the time you’re reading this letter, all votes will have been cast and (hopefully) counted. While we can’t
predict the political landscape of our country or state, we can say there is always more work to do! Every year is
an election year, and in order to protect the voting rights of North Carolinians, educate voters, and encourage
civic participation this year and every year, we need your continued support!
Now is a great time to give. If you’re a first-time donor, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation will match your gift.
If you’re a returning donor, the increased amount will be matched! If you become one of our monthly
sustaining donors, an anonymous donor will match the first 12 months of your gift!
As this letter goes to the printer, many of our supporters have already cast their ballot during the 17 days of
early voting, which we helped restore. Others will be reviewing their notes from our poll monitor training as
they prepare to be Vote Protectors at a polling place on Election Day. Some will be taking one last look at our
nonpartisan voter guide before they cast their ballot.
2016 has been a remarkable and ambitious year in many ways, and we couldn’t have done it without you! Your
generous support enabled our field organizers, other staff, and thousands of Democracy Advocates to:
 Defeat the 2013 Monster Law – ending the photo ID requirement and restoring Same-Day Registration,
out-of-precinct voting, pre-registration for teenagers, and 17 days of Early Voting;
 Advocate for strong Early Voting plans, including 25 sites on or adjoining campuses and 21 counties with
Sunday hours, which set the stage for 50 marches and Souls to the Polls events;
 Coordinate the largest nonpartisan poll monitor training program in North Carolina’s history;
 Educate and mobilize thousands of congregations with the NAACP and a network of Faith Ambassadors;
 Distribute over 750,000 voting tips wallet cards and 1,100,000 nonpartisan Voter Guides;
 Organize phone banks, rides to the polls, voter registration drives, and pledge card campaigns;
 Upgrade our websites and greatly expand our social media program to help voters in all 100 counties.
In 2016, our state and Democracy NC have been on the national stage. We received donations and support from
individuals here at home and across the country. As Colin said, Democracy NC is working on systemic changes in
our voting system, changes that can be replicated across the country and that can again make North Carolina a
national leader in voting rights.
As the national spotlight fades, YOUR support will help us continue fighting for access to the ballot, fair
elections, and nonpartisan redistricting. Give now . . . and remember those matching gifts!

In looking to give this election, I decided to put money less into political campaigns and more into organizations
that have the potential for systemic change. I looked around at different types of organizations and saw all the
good work Democracy NC was doing. And then I sent money. – Colin Fahrion, 1st time donor
