Stem cells have the ability to self-renew and differentiate into multiple cell lineages. Their fate is regulated by their niche, or microenvironment. Stem cell therapies aim to regenerate injured tissues by differentiating stem cells into resident cell types. Mesenchymal stem cells from adipose tissue are abundant and can differentiate into cells of mesenchymal lineages. Amniotic membrane and stem cell secretomes may promote wound healing and tissue regeneration by reducing inflammation and stimulating growth of new blood vessels and tissue. Clinical applications in wound healing, acne scarring, neurologic conditions, and various diseases have shown promise.

This document discusses how emojis, emoticons, and text speak can be used to teach students. It provides background on the origins of emoticons in 1982 as ways to convey tone and feelings in text communications. It then suggests that with text speak and emojis, students can translate, decode, summarize, play with language, and add emotion to language. A number of websites and apps that can be used for emoji-related activities, lessons, and discussions are also listed.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere, promising self-driving cars, medical breakthroughs, and new ways of working. But how do you separate hype from reality? How can your company apply AI to solve real business problems?
Here’s what AI learnings your business should keep in mind for 2017.
Study: The Future of VR, AR and Self-Driving CarsLinkedIn
We asked LinkedIn members worldwide about their levels of interest in the latest wave of technology: whether they’re using wearables, and whether they intend to buy self-driving cars and VR headsets as they become available. We asked them too about their attitudes to technology and to the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the devices that they use. The answers were fascinating – and in many cases, surprising.
This SlideShare explores the full results of this study, including detailed market-by-market breakdowns of intention levels for each technology – and how attitudes change with age, location and seniority level. If you’re marketing a tech brand – or planning to use VR and wearables to reach a professional audience – then these are insights you won’t want to miss.

Tribute Lecture at Brawijaya Women & Children Hospital Jakarta 2013 on the topic of the usefulness of human stem cell in dermatology including case reports
The document discusses tissue reconstruction and regeneration processes after injury. There are four main types of reconstruction: repair, regeneration, replacement by different tissue (fibrosis/scarring), and replacement by the same tissue. Stem cells can aid reconstruction through differentiation. Mesenchymal stem cells from sources like bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord are discussed as promising for regenerative applications due to their abundance, ease of harvest, and ability to differentiate into multiple cell types. The importance of using low oxygen conditions for culturing stem cells is also summarized.
This document discusses the use of human growth factors and cytokines derived from stem cell conditioned media for skin rejuvenation and healing. It begins by defining stem cells, cytokines, and growth factors, explaining how they control growth, development, and healing. Specifically, it explores how bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell conditioned media contains optimal levels of anti-inflammatory growth factors and cytokines compared to other sources like adipose tissue. Pilot clinical studies and trials demonstrate the efficacy of topical products containing bone marrow stem cell conditioned media in reducing inflammation, improving skin tone and texture.

The document summarizes various technologies for wound healing, including X-Stat, a syringe-like device that injects expandable sponges to stop arterial bleeding. It also discusses a self-healing nanogel that can accelerate burn wound healing by acting as a scaffold for skin cell growth. Additionally, it covers Vetigel, a plant-derived gel that claims to quickly stop bleeding in external and internal wounds. Digital bandages are described that can monitor vital signs like heart rate from a wearable adhesive patch. Smart bandages incorporating sensors to monitor wound status and deliver medicine are also presented.
Cultured skin substitutes prepared from cultured skin cells and biopolymers can reduce the need for donor skin grafts and have been shown to effectively treat excised burns, burn scars, and congenital skin lesions. Cultured skin substitutes generate skin phenotypes in the lab and restore tissue function and systemic homeostasis when implanted. Healed skin from cultured skin substitutes is smooth, soft and strong, though pigmentation may be irregular. Cultured skin substitutes close 67 times the area of donor skin compared to less than 4 times for split-thickness skin grafts, and result in similar qualitative outcomes.

The document discusses various treatments for burn wounds including excision and grafting, cultured epithelial autografts, and the temporary skin substitute TransCyte. Excision and grafting involves removing dead tissue (eschar) and placing skin grafts to promote healing. Cultured epithelial autografts grow a patient's own skin cells into a sheet for grafting to help cover large burns. TransCyte is a bilayer synthetic skin substitute that provides a barrier and stimulates healing until the wound re-epithelializes and can be grafted.
Tissue expanders are valuable adjuncts in reconstructive maxillofacial surgery. They allow surgeons to replace lost or excised tissue with similar texture and thickness from neighboring tissue. Tissue expansion works by applying mechanical forces that induce controlled in situ skin growth. This stretches the skin beyond its limits, invoking biological pathways that increase cell growth and collagen synthesis, resulting in a net gain in skin surface area. Tissue expanders are silicone implants placed subcutaneously that are inflated over time to generate new tissue. They improve surgical outcomes by reducing the need for skin grafts and flaps.

Tissue repair and healing occurs through two main processes: regeneration of injured tissue or replacement by connective tissue scarring. Regeneration involves cell proliferation driven by growth factors and interaction with the extracellular matrix, allowing tissues like skin and liver to regenerate injured cells. Scarring involves inflammation, cell proliferation, new blood vessel formation, and remodeling of connective tissue deposited by fibroblasts into a stable scar. Both regeneration and scarring usually work together to repair tissue damage. Factors like infection, poor nutrition, steroids, or poor blood flow can impair the normal tissue repair process.

We’re talking about Vedic Meditation, a form of meditation that has been around for at least 5,000 years. Back then, the people who lived in the Indus Valley, now known as India and Pakistan, practised meditation as a fundamental part of daily life. This knowledge that has given us yoga and Ayurveda, was known as Veda, hence the name Vedic. And though there are some written records, the practice has been passed down verbally from generation to generation.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune DiseaseHealth Advances
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
4. Why Stem Cells ?
By definition, a stem cell is
characterized by its ability to self-
renew and its ability to trans
differentiate along multiple lineage
pathways.
6. Self-renewal of stem cells
Asymmetric cell division : to maintain the
stem cell number
A. Intrinsic asymmetric cell division
B. Extrinsic (Eviromental) asymetric cell
devision
Morrison & Kimble 2006
7. Intrinsic asymmetric cell division
One stem cell divides into two daughter cells,
which are different from each other.
One of daughter cells is similar to the parental
cell and
The other daughter cell becomes progenitor
cell, which will eventually differentiate into
tissue committed resident cell.
10. Stem cells NICHE
The microenvironment in which stem cells
are found.
The microenvironment interacts with
stem cells to regulate stem cell fate.
Various niche factors act on stem cells to
alter their gene expression, and induce their
proliferation or differentiation.
11. Stem Cells NICHE
Niche factors include:
1. cell-cell interactions between stem cells,
2. interactions between stem cells and neighboring
differentiated cells,
3. interactions between stem cells and extra-
cellular matrix components, adhesion
molecules,growth factors, cytokines and
physiochemical nature of the microenvironment.
4. Niche has both anatomic and functional
dimensions.
12.
13. Regenerative medicinal applications should
meet the following criteria:
Can be found in abundant quantities
(millions to billions of cells)
Can be harvested by a minimally invasive
procedure
Can be differentiated along multiple cell
lineage pathways in a regulatable and
reproducible manner.
Can be safely and effectively transplanted
to either an autologous or allogeneic host
18. Tissue Repair
Replacement of injured tissue
by different tissue, usually
by fibrosis or scar
(Kumar et al. 2009, Majno & Joris 2004)
19. Tissue Regeneration
Replacement of injured tissue
by the same resident cells, or
by differentiation of
progenitor/stem cells into
tissue committed cells.
(Kumar et al. 2009, Majno & Joris 2004)
22. Stem Cells Transplantation
Autologous
Allogeneic : from individuals belonging to
the same species but genetically dissimilar
(and hence immunologiccally
incmpatible)
Syngeneic : between geneticcally identical
individual (tween)
Xenogeneic : From individuals of different
species (hence of disparate cell type)
