When you think of a developer what comes to mind? A brogrammer living in San Francisco working 23 hours a day on the next Facebook? If so, you wouldn’t be alone. Like so many industries, software development is rife with stereotypes. And one that is particularly pervasive is the idea that all developers, if given the chance, would opt for a complete rewrite of an application.
While it’s true that there are many software developers who do enjoy starting with a clean slate, there is also a group who loves working on making existing applications better. Rather than starting from scratch and building an 80% solution, these developers are ideal for taking over a project once it’s become stable, and nurturing it for a long time. Neither developer is better. Both are needed in the software world. In this talk, you’ll learn what motivates the small but passionate group of “menders” — people who love taking an existing project and making it better over time.

This document summarizes a student project on developing a Parking Management System. The system aims to address issues with current parking practices like maintaining paper records and difficulties finding vehicle details. This project report describes the development of a semi-autonomous vehicle system to reduce road accidents caused by human error. The system uses a Raspberry Pi connected to ultrasonic sensors, a camera module, and a motor controller. Knowledge Graph Recommendation Systems For COVID-19
The objective of this tutorial is to give the audience hands-on experience to work through the basics about knowledge graph and recommender technology, and how to use them for building an article recommender for COVID-19 research.
Particularly, we used a dataset of COVID research-related papers. We consider two tasks, author to paper recommendation and paper to paper recommendation. This work is interesting in the sense that it touches several areas of ML such as recommendation systems, knowledge graphs and NLP.
This work has been done with my amazing collaborators Zhihong (Iris) Shen, Jianxun Lian and Le Zhang.

Background:
Zipcar is a car rental company that uses a revolutionary automated system in which cars are rented by hours or days. The company tried to spread its cars in several locations to make it easy for the Zipcar ‘s customers to get their cars. Indeed, every car has a home location to which it must be returned. These locations are available on the Zipcar website. All cars are equipped with a patented wireless technology that enables communicating actual information about their availability to customers, and provides the company with useful information to monitor car security, fulfill reservations, and maintain mileage information. Zipcar business model does not rely on human contact, which is not the case for its competitors. In fact, Zipcar customers do not have to stand in queues and fill papers to rent their car as the traditional companies do. Customers also knew in advance the make and the model of the car they will rent. In addition to that, Zipcar rents cars 24/7 thanks to its unique IT platform, which is not the case for traditional car rental companies. The company also uses social networks by creating an online community of users so that they can share their experience. Zipcar is also trying to market its innovative technology to attract some institutions that could be interested to buy it such as competitors and government. Finally, the wireless technology is considered as the main core competency and competitive advantage of the Zipcar.
Analysis:
The main challenges that face the company concern its expansion nationally and globally. Scott Griffith (2011) claimed “We look at three key factors. The first is high population density, the second is a strong public transportation infrastructure, and the third is expensive and hard to find parking.” Therefore, the company has difficulties to expand in some areas where the traditional car rental companies are established. This project report describes the development of a semi-autonomous vehicle system to reduce road accidents caused by human error. The system uses a Raspberry Pi connected to ultrasonic sensors, a camera module, and a motor controller. It allows the driver to control the vehicle, but can detect hazards and take control to avoid collisions. The goal is to create an affordable and publicly acceptable solution compared to fully autonomous vehicles, which face challenges related to cost, technology, jobs, and privacy/security. The report provides background on autonomous vehicle research and the limitations of current autonomous systems. It then describes the hardware and software design of the proposed semi-autonomous system and presents results demonstrating its functionality.

Waves of change will roll through the transportation industry and practices as autonomy ramps up in personal and mass transportation, as well as in logistics/delivery segments. We examine how autonomous vehicles will be developed, deployed and monetized, creating new business models across the transportation sector. Explore autonomous vehicles roadblocks and operational challenges, emerging standards and protocols, connected services and their associated big data strategies and opportunities.
Knowledge Graph Recommendation Systems For COVID-19
The objective of this tutorial is to give the audience hands-on experience to work through the basics about knowledge graph and recommender technology, and how to use them for building an article recommender for COVID-19 research.
Particularly, we used a dataset of COVID research-related papers. We consider two tasks, author to paper recommendation and paper to paper recommendation. This work is interesting in the sense that it touches several areas of ML such as recommendation systems, knowledge graphs and NLP.
This work has been done with my amazing collaborators Zhihong (Iris) Shen, Jianxun Lian and Le Zhang.

Background:
Zipcar is a car rental company that uses a revolutionary automated system in which cars are rented by hours or days. The company tried to spread its cars in several locations to make it easy for the Zipcar ‘s customers to get their cars. Indeed, every car has a home location to which it must be returned. These locations are available on the Zipcar website. All cars are equipped with a patented wireless technology that enables communicating actual information about their availability to customers, and provides the company with useful information to monitor car security, fulfill reservations, and maintain mileage information. Zipcar business model does not rely on human contact, which is not the case for its competitors. In fact, Zipcar customers do not have to stand in queues and fill papers to rent their car as the traditional companies do. Customers also knew in advance the make and the model of the car they will rent. In addition to that, Zipcar rents cars 24/7 thanks to its unique IT platform, which is not the case for traditional car rental companies. The company also uses social networks by creating an online community of users so that they can share their experience. Zipcar is also trying to market its innovative technology to attract some institutions that could be interested to buy it such as competitors and government. Finally, the wireless technology is considered as the main core competency and competitive advantage of the Zipcar.
Analysis:
The main challenges that face the company concern its expansion nationally and globally. Scott Griffith (2011) claimed “We look at three key factors. The first is high population density, the second is a strong public transportation infrastructure, and the third is expensive and hard to find parking.” Therefore, the company has difficulties to expand in some areas where the traditional car rental companies are established.
