Editor's Notes
My blog name is recovergirl. It was inspired by reduce, reuse, recycleIt is a play on the brand – covergirl. Re Covergirl. It is not because I’m recovering from something. I get that question a lot.It is a place where I collect examples of design and style that celebrate creative reuse of materials.

Early donations is part of the reason the swap is so successfulCompared to Portland SwapNo money exchangedDonations from Individuals (friends and family and staff of library)Donations from second hand stores STA and Wear HouseDonations from employees of stores like TBL and Bottomline
We promote the swap with a press release to Seacoast newspapers and community calendars. We also promote it with video and photographs on social mediaAnd posters around townThis is a vignette I created that was photographed and run in the WIRE the week before swap two years ago.All of the promotion contributes to the great turn out. We generally get around 250 attendees.

Day of the SwapAbout 6-8 volunteersI greet and direct people where to put their donationsThey are given a free cloth bag to fill with “new to you” itemsVolunteers sort and run the newly donated items onto the floor constantlyQuestionable items are taken out and set aside
A couple of years backWe ran a couple of kids’ clothing swapsI really wanted this to work I have kids of my ownBut the energy just wasn’t behind itIt was harder to get early donationsIt was harder to get volunteers And the attendance was relatively lowSo after two attempts we let it go
Something I want to improve going forward Is communicating the message that although this is a fun community eventIt is also a donation drive for goodwill to support their amazing programs.I do see an occasional bad apple taking advantageThis year I’m going to make a visual (like in an airport) that more clearly reminds people that they should not over do it
I always want to include an element of funI’ve set up a smile booth at a couple of the swapsThis year I’ll attempt to set up a self serve one with an ipadThis year we will include a Goodwill coupon raffle
The swap is scheduled from 10am-2pm.It is a whirl windThe volunteers are literally exhausted by 2pmWe quickly close down the swap, almost like a night clubAnd just like a night club there are people who are hanging on to the very endWe bag the leftovers and load them into the Goodwill truck.Last year we raised 1,800 pounds of donations for Goodwill
