Annual Report
This annual report summarizes a community initiative to address childhood literacy gaps in Englewood, Colorado. The initiative partnered with the Englewood Public Library to create a summer lunch and literacy program called "Hungry for a Story." Over many months, the group researched literacy issues, spoke with stakeholders, and developed supplemental materials. More than twenty years ago, Robert Croshon, an elderly friend of Frye Gaillard's, told him the story of Croshon's ancestor, Gilbert Fields, an African-born slave in Georgia who led his family on a daring flight to freedom.
Fields and his family ran away intending to travel north, but clouds obscured the stars and when morning came Fields discovered they had been running south instead. They had no choice but to seek sanctuary with the Seminole Indians of Florida and later a community of free blacks in Mobile.
With Croshon's blessing, Gaillard has expanded this oral history into a novel for young readers, weaving the story of Gilbert Fields through the nearly forgotten history of the Seminoles and their alliance with runaway slaves. As Gaillard's narrative makes clear, the Seminole Wars of the 1830s, in which Indians fought side by side with former slaves, represents the largest slave uprising in American history.

- 7. GSA WORD of the DAY The purpose of the Word of the Day is to provide students with the meaning of the words associated with LGBTQ and Equity that we hear and use every day. Today’s word is Heteronormativity. Heteronormativity is the belief or assumption that all people are heterosexual, or that heterosexuality is the default or “normal” state of human being. It tends to complement and accompany concepts like cisnormativity, and gender binarism. A heteronormative society operates on the assumption that heterosexuality and specific gender features are the human “default” These assumptions can be hurtful because they are stigmatizing and marginalizing, making people who are LGPTQ feel like they are perceived as deviant or unnatural.
