COMPARISON OF
ANIMAL FARM
WITH
THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION
WELCOME
MR. JONES
The owner of the ANIMAL FARM. He was
a tyrant man, irresponsible to his animals,
often described as a character with a
whip, he used to beat the animals.
CZAR NICHOLAS II
The last Emperor of Russia. He
was given the nickname
Nicholas the Bloody by his
political adversaries due to the
Khodynka Tragedy, anti-Semitic
pogroms, Bloody Sunday, the
violent suppression of the 1905
Russian Revolution, the
executions of political
opponents, and his perceived
responsibility for the Russo-
Japanese War.
OLD MAJOR
Founded the basis of Animalism.
Challenged the idea about how
the animals worked to sweat
albeit Mr. Jones took away all
their product. Died before the
animal revolution started in the
farm.
KARL MARX
German Philosopher and a student of
law introduced the idea of
Communism in his 1984 publication
The Communist Manifesto. Many
intellectuals, labour unions, artists and
political parties worldwide have been
influenced by Marx's work, with many
modifying or adapting his ideas. Marx
is typically cited as one of the principal
architects of modern social science.
ANIMALISM
THE SEVEN COMMANDMENTS:
1. Whatever goes upon two legs is
an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or
has wings, is a friend.
3. No animal shall wear clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
6. No animal shall kill any other
animal.
7. All animals are equal.
COMMUNISM
COMMUNIST COMMANDMENT:
1. Abolition of private property in land and application of all rents of land to
public purpose.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank
with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.
6. Centralization of the means of communication and transportation in the hands
of the state.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; the
bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil
generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. Equal obligation of all to work. Establishment of Industrial armies, especially
for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of
the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of
the population over the country.
10. Free education for all children in government schools. Abolition of children's
factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial
production, etc. etc.
SNOWBALL
Snowball was a young, smart and
good speaker. He was an idealistic
individual. Really wanted to make life
better for all the animals. He was one
of the leaders’ of the revolution at the
farm. Was chased into exile by
Napoleone’s dogs.
LEON TROTSKY
Leon Trotsky was a Russian
Revolutionary,theorist and Soviet
politician. Ideologically a Marxist and a
Leninist, he later developed his own
version of Marxist thought, Trotskyism.
He was chased and killed by Stalin’s
KGB.
NAPOLEON
Napoleon was not a good speaker
and not as clever as Snowball. He
was cruel, tyrant and corrupt. His
ambitions were only to be in the
power. He used dogs, moses and
Squealer to control the animals of
the farm.
JOSEPH STALIN
Joseph Stalin was a Russian
Revolutionary who rose to power
to rule the Soviet Union. He was
not a good speaker and a good
leader like Trotsky. He was tyrant
and killed anyone who opposed
him. He used KGB, allowed
Church, and propagandas to
control the population of the
Soviet Russia.
SQUEALER
This character had a big mouth
and talked too much. His work was
to convince other animals to follow
Napoleon. He is the one who
changes the commandments.
VYACHESLAV MOLOTOV
Vyacheslav Molotov was one of
Stalin's most loyal supporters. He
was Stalin's Prime Minister in the
1930's, and signed many of the
documents that sent Russians
away to exile or death. His loyalty
can no doubt be related to
Squealer, both of them were
supportive of their leaders, even
during tough times.
THE DOGS
The dogs can be thought of as
a private army that Napoleon
used to fear and force animals
to work. They killed anyone
who opposed Napoleon.
KGB
The KGB were not really police but
forced support for Stalin. Usually killed
full families for disobedience towards
Stalin.
MOSES THE RAVEN
Moses spread the lie about the
Candyland, where animals could go if
they work hard. Snowball was against
him. Napoleon let him stay because
he taught animals to work and not
complain.
RELIGION
Famously said by Karl Marx “Religion
is the opium of the masses”. Although
opposed by the Communist
philosophy, Stalin allowed Churches
to operate in Soveit Russia because
Stalin knew Religion would stop
violent revolution.
BOXER
Like the working class in Russia,
Boxer is strong, and persevering.
He is hardworking, and
unquestionably loyal to
Napoleon's regime. Without
Boxer, the Battle of the Cowshed
could possibly not have been
won, nor would the windmill been
have built without his relentless
work ethic. In the same way, the
Russian Revolution could not
have happened without the huge
push from the working class.
However, just like with the
working class in Russia, once
Boxer outlived his usefulness, he
was sent to die.
BENJAMIN
It's hard to make a direct connection
for Benjamin to the Russian
Revolution, one of the theories is
that he represents the Russian
people who were against the
revolution, but did nothing about it
for fear of punishment. Benjamin
refuses to act, and he doesn't feel
excited about the revolution as the
other animals did. He sees the
injustice that is happening, but
cannot do anything about it. And
when he does choose to act (when
he tries to warn the other animals
about the men taking Boxer away), it
is too late
