Reliance Power has signed an agreement with Japanese company JERA to set up a 750-megawatt power plant in Bangladesh, representing India's largest foreign direct investment in Bangladesh. Reliance Power will hold a 51% stake in the joint venture, while JERA will hold 49%. The project is expected to cost around Rs. 5,430 crore or $750 million and will be developed using a build-own-operate model.

India is known for 100GW solar target by 2022, low solar tariffs and competitive bidding. India added 3GW solar in 2015-16 adding to a cumulative capacity of 8GW and will be adding 10GW in 2016-17. Another success achieved in solar in Inida, is in the offgrid solar pumping program in Rajasthan which realised the Food - Water - Energy nexus and provided a holistic solution for the farmer's livelihood. Rajasthan's Horticulture Department, under the leadership of Dr Dinesh Kumar Goyal, introduced a composite irrigation package through creation of water harvesting structures, recharging ground water, pumping with solar pumps and irrigating through drip. Some farmers' income levels increased four-fold and even young MBA graduates were inspired to take up farming.
To support the scale up of solar pumping program, we developed a project for "Remote Performance Monitoring and Outsourced Service Management of Solar Pumps and Off-grid Solar PV Plants" which was recently selected for funding by PACEsetter Fund in India, which is a joint initiative of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt of India and the US State Department.

- 1. India’s Largest FDI in Bangladesh Anil Ambani’s Reliance Power inks the largest FDI deal for India in Bangladesh
- 2. Reliance Power has entered into an agreement with Japanese utility JERA to set up a 750-megawatt (MW) power plant in Bangladesh.
- 3. Reliance Power will hold 51 per cent stake while JERA will have 49 per cent in the JV.
- 4. In 2015, Reliance Power had signed a MoU with Bangladesh to set up a total of 3,000 MW of power generation capacity.
- 5. The will help Reliance Power repay Rs. 835 crore worth of debt.
- 6. Reliance Power is also the equipment provider for the project.
- 7. It will relocate the equipment from AP’s Samalkot power plant to Bangladesh.
- 8. It plans to use funds paid for the equipment for repayment of debt worth Rs. 835 crore.
- 9. Stock markets have reacted positively to the news with Reliance Power shares jumping 11% in intraday trading.
- 10. The project would be developed on a build-own-operate model.
- 11. The project is likely to cost around Rs. 5,430 crore or $750 million.
