Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes Mountains on October 13, 1972, leaving 45 people stranded. After exhausting their meager food supplies and with many injured, the survivors resorted to cannibalism to survive. On December 12th, Nando Parrado and two others began a trek to find help. After 10 days of hiking, they encountered Sergio Catalán who brought them help. A rescue effort followed and found the remaining 16 survivors over two months after the crash.
