In the fall of 2014 I was presented with the opportunity to go on a missions trip to
Zambia. We had a few meetings about this trip and interest grew. Next thing I knew
it was March of 2015 and I was headed off to Haiti. Plans had changed but I could
never have imagined what great impact this would have on my life. Haiti is not
know for much but it is known for being poor. This might dissuade people from
visiting, but for me it was exactly what I needed. We got to Haiti and even in the
airport saw the people desperate for money to feed themselves and their families.
We took a ten passenger plane up the mountain and as we flew we were able to see
the poverty in the towns below. There were houses made up of four corner poles

During the 1920s, the device known as the low boy was invented. The name was
appropriate because it stood approximately one to two feet off the ground (2). Like
the bass drum pedal, the low boy was a contraption that would be triggered by the
foot. When it was triggered, it would bring two cymbals together to create a chink
sound. Before this invention, drummers would accent certain points in the music by
holding two cymbals together in one hand and creating the noise that way. Now,
with this invention, a hand was freed, and the percussionist could use his hand to do
other activities (2). The development of the lowboy also encouraged four way
independence. Four way independence is the practice of having each limb on one s
body play something different. This encouraged more syncopated rhythms which
encouraged better music (2). As time went on, the lowboy slowly became taller and
taller, and it soon developed into the hi hat cymbal. Steve Fidyk summed the evolution
of this mechanism perfectly. The lowboy was elevated twice during its development.
It grew into the sock cymbal, (approximately twenty inches tall), and eventually, the
hi hat, as swing drummers like Chick Webb, Gene Krupa, Ray McKinley, and Jo
Jones wanted the option of playing time on the cymbals with their hands.
The invention of the low boy allowed for new styles of music to be invented. This

cognitive System 1 and System 2 ways of thinking. System 1 generates feelings,
impressions, and memory. It is very instinctive, automatic, and is considered quick
thinking. System 2 on the other hand, is alert during complex problem solving,
while dealing with facts and knowledge, and is attentive while working with
difficult calculations. For example, a problem such as 24 x 13, this takes more time
and knowledge to figure out (System 2), rather then recognizing an emotion from
face expressions (System 1). When System 1 is strained, your System 2 steps in to
help you process through that specific instant. Now aside from the psychological
portion of this book, Mr. Kahneman divulges about a consolidated economic analysis
with elemental intuitions from the psychological perspective; such as, luck and skill,
overconfidence, risks in the stock market, factors of success and the decision making

Gerard Hauser critiques Habermas construction of the public sphere, pointing out
many of its weaknesses. Hauser does concede that Habermas ideas about the public
sphere are meant to focus solely on the bourgeois public sphere and not include all
public spheres; however, Habermas critics have approached his model as universal,
so it needs to be examined, contextually, as an approach to universally understanding
public spheres (47 48).
Because Hauser s approach to the public sphere is more dynamic than Habermas , by
that I mean that it purposefully engages multiple public spheres their individual
autonomy as well as their influence on other public spheres differences between the
two rationales are presented. Hauser points to six crucial differences, where he feels
that Habermas missed the mark at understanding the transformation of the public
sphere. Hauser is concerned with how discourse realistically happens within the
public sphere, whereas, he argues, Habermas argument is contingent on the existence
of ideal speech (46).
Hauser s first problem with Habermas theory of the public sphere is that in order for

Tecumseh was a Shawnee Indian chief who had been born around 1768 near
Springfield, Ohio. During the early 1800s, he started to oppose the United States, and
attempted to create a confederation of Indian Tribes to rebel against the United
States. One of the main reasons Tecumseh opposed the United States was the fact
that white people were squatting on Native American land, and was forcing his
people out. Although Tecumseh opposed whites, he knew how to speak their
language. Tecumseh was described as a six foot tall man with fine features. He had
been rumored to be fluent in English, and most surprisingly, also in French. He also
managed to turn his brother s religious teachings into political movements in order to
