The respiratory system consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. The nose and pharynx warm and filter incoming air before it reaches the lungs. The trachea branches into smaller tubes called bronchi that distribute air into the lungs, where gas exchange takes place as oxygen passes into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is removed.
