1. Analysis of ‘Gossip – Standing in the way of control’
Genre: Indie Rock (2006)
Gossip are a riot grrrl band, whichis a movement that allows
women to make their own place within the male dominated
punk scene. They have a female singer who is viewed as
strong, this relates to the genre itself. The video features the
band themselves, guitar and drums. The colours, clothing
and animation show that although they are a riot grrrl band
that they have an indie edge, one member is dressed in a
balaclava this is a statement of their views and overall
meaning of the song, this is also similar to the Punk band
Pussy Riot.
Narrative:
The main narrative within this video is highlighting female
empowerment, hence the lead singer herself being female.
The song itself is in relation to the control that the patriarchy
withholds, Beth Ditto and feminists in general stand in their
way by making music such as this, and making their place
known within society. The overall meaning is in regards the
bands own personal identity and sexuality, the song is
Standing in the way of outlawed gay marriage, that they will
“Live their lives” regardless of the oppression.

The target audience is 17+ Females, it also appeals to
people who are gay marriage supports, anyone who is
involved within the riot grrrl movement and people who
enjoy indie rock music. This song is very popular within the UK
because the audience can relate to this song and its
meaning.
Representation:
The band itself are being represented as a part of the riot
grrrl movement however, Beth Ditto is mainly viewed as a
strong and independent female figure.
Green screen is used in order to create the visual aspect and
add animation; the animation is fun, game-like and has
bright colours. The band (especially in this video) are
represented more as a British indie rock band rather than an
American rock band.
