This document analyzes and compares the design features of four different music packaging formats:
1) The Brit Awards and Nine Inch Nails digipaks use cardboard construction with cutouts for easy access to CDs and booklets. They promote the artists and awards shows while being recyclable.
2) The Office digipak also uses cardboard but the plastic CD holders prevent full recyclability. It promotes the TV show with simple white design.
3) The Nirvana jewel pack is made of entirely of plastic so nothing can be recycled. It draws attention with an unusual cover photo and promotes the grunge artist.
2. BRIT AWARDS DIGIPAK
• AESTHETICS: Red, white and blue are used throughout the digipak; pursuing the theme
of the British flag. This helps buyers find the digipak in a shop as they know this is what
they will be looking for in a ‘Brit Awards’ CD.
• CUSTOMER: There is a very wide audience of customers who will buy this product as a
large range of people watch the Brit Awards. Anyone and everyone can enjoy this music
so there is no specific target audience for this product.
• ERGONOMICS: A cut-away is used in this digipak to enable the leaflets and CDs to be
taken out easily.
• ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: The digipak is made out of glossy cardboard which means
that it is biodegradable and can be recycled.
• SIZE: This digipak includes 3 folds, 3 CDs and an information leaflet.
• FUNCTION: It is promoting the Brit Awards in general, artists involved in the awards and
also promoting mastercard; as shown on the front of the digipak.
• MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING: There is no plastic used at all in this product, only
glossy cardboard and paper used for the actual packaging and the leaflet. This makes the
product recyclable and environmentally friendly.

4. NINE INCH NAILS DIGIPAK
• AESTHETICS: The colours used are mainly orange and black. The back cover has a light pale
background but still pursues the orange colour scheme by adding a photograph of orange
flowers on the back of the digipak. The song names are found in the middle of the digipak, this
means it is easy to find, also it is in the middle of both CDs meaning there is no need to keep
flipping over to the back to see what number each track is. Another interesting feature is that
the CDs are labelled ‘left’ and ‘right’ rather than ‘1’ and ‘2’ which creates the idea that this is a
different kind of artist; out of the ordinary.
• CUSTOMER: Anyone who enjoys the genre of music ‘industrial rock’.
• ERGONOMICS: Alike the Brit Awards digipak, this product includes a cutaway, allowing the
buyer to access the disks easily and quickly.
• ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: The digipak is made from glossy cardboard meaning that it is
biodegradable and recyclable.
• SIZE: The digipak includes 2 folds, 2 CDs and 1 information booklet.
• FUNCTION: To entertain, inform and promote the artist.
• MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING: Although the digipak is made from cardboard, it also
uses plastic CD holders rather than slip-in CD holders therefore the digipak is not entirely
recyclable.

6. THE OFFICE DIGIPAK
• AESTHETICS: The aesthetics for this digipak are very simple; a white
background with grey text, no pictures and very little text on the front.
• CUSTOMER: The main target audience of this series is both males and
females ranging from 18-30 years old, however, many others may watch this
depending on whether they enjoy watching sitcoms or not.
• ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: The main packaging of this digipak is made
purely from card. However, like the Nine Inch Nails digipak, the CD holders
inside are made from plastic; therefore it is not entirely recyclable.
• ERGONOMICS: A cut-away is used on the outer packaging, making the inner
packaging accessible and easy to get to quickly.
• SIZE: The digipak has 2 folds and 3 CDs
• FUNCTION: To inform, entertain and promote the series
• MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING: The digipak is mainly made form
cardboard, but the plastic CD holders make the product unable to be
recycled.

8. NIRVANA JEWEL PACK
• AESTHETICS: The front cover is a picture of a naked baby underwater with a dollar
floating next to it. This is a very unusual front cover which draws attention from the
audience to this jewel pack. This gives the impression that this band may be slightly
different.
• CUSTOMER: A target audience of anyone who enjoys ‘grunge’ music. At the time this
jewel pack was created, the main target audience was anarchic youth.
• ERGONOMICS: As this jewel pack is made from purely plastic, there is no cutaway used.
Instead there are plastic tabs in the CD case for the booklet to be slid in the front, and a
plastic CD holder is included in the pack.
• ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: As the jewel pack is entirely plastic, nothing can be recycled
so it is not environmentally friendly.
• SIZE: This includes 1 opening to the CD, no folds, 1 CD inside and one booklet slid under
the plastic tabs in the front.
• FUNCTION: To inform, entertain and to promote the artist.
• MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING: Made entirely from plastic therefore not recyclable.
