When you look at legacy integration solutions that were built for enterprise data warehouses, you see that they sit in front of the EDW and do all the processing, data merging, transformation and cleansing before it goes into the data warehouse. And that made sense in yesterday’s world since EDW’s are so expensive.
The issue however is as data volume grows, this approach does not scale – both architecturally and economically. The industry statistics are that using Hadoop vs EDW is 45X costs savings ($1,000/TB for Hadoop vs $45,000/TB for traditional EDW)
In Today’s world you need a modern data integration platform that can take advantage of Hadoop.
With Talend, we are doing all that processing and cleansing inside of Hadoop, so you are getting much more scalability at a much lower cost and taking advantage of the power, speed and elasticity of the Hadoop platform. So we can handle 10 times more data.
With Talend’s approach and Spark, we are at a minimum 5X faster and sometimes 100x faster then legacy integration competitors and at 1/5 the price.
So talk about a great value proposition
So the first thing we will talk about is Talend Real-Time Big Data. This is a new offering and is the 1st data integration platform on Spark. It buiilds on Talend Big Data and MapReduce, providing native support for Spark, Spark Streaming, Talend Data Services and Enterprise Messaging.
We ask each of the analysts we briefed, including Forrester, Gartner, and 451 Research if they have seen this level of support by other vendors for Spark They said no. They
said Talend has a first mover advantage here as far as the depth and breadth of Spark support.
Using the graphical Talend Studio you visually build integration jobs that generate native Spark code. That code can then be run inside a Hadoop platform like Cloudera, Hortonworks, MapR. It can be run standalone – in fact our new Real-Time Big Data Sandbox runs standalone. Or it can run in the Cloud, e.g. it runs in Amazon EMR.
We will talk more about performance, but depending on what you are doing there is a 5 to 100 times performance gain in using Spark over MapReduce, and as a developer you are 10 times more productive using Talend model-driven tooling instead of handcoding.
Talend 6 provides over 100 new drag-and-drop Spark components, so you can immediately connect to traditional data sources, Hadoop, NoSQL, Cloud storage. There are components for transformation, connecting to messaging systems like Apache Kafka and Amazone Kinesis, machine learning components and caching components as well.
Another important capability that comes with Spark and Talend 6 is running processes in-memory and doing window-based computations. So for example if you are ingesting a stream of data, you can set a time period to analyze that data stream for any changes.
And we have talked about the back-end data processing through Spark, but what about when I need to connect sensors, how does the data get captured.
This is where Talend delivers an end-to-end Internet of Things Platform and Talend 6 adds support for Apache Kafka which connects right into Spark Streaming.
For example, if you have hundreds of windmills with embedded sensors generating terabytes of data per hour, that data can be captured and delivered using Talend’s connectors to IoT protocols (MQTT) and high speed reliable messaing with AMQP, Kafka, Talend ESB, Apache Flume, or if in the cloud, Amazon Kinesis. This Fast data is then ingested and processed
using Talend and Spark, and can then be stored in Hadoop, NoSQL or for the cloud something like Amazon RedShift.
Talend provides all the connectors to these systems so you can turn IoT data into real-time decisions using one product.
General Electric is a Talend customer for example, and they analyze turbine data to report daily on turbine efficiency, MTTF (Mean time to failure) averages, performance metrics etc. This data is used to capture when turbines break down or have specific parts failure. They have been able to not only reduce inventory investments (once they know which parts fail and how often can re-calibrate inventory management) they are able to be much more proactive with maintenance routines and fixing issues prior to them occurring. Improved customer satisfaction, improved productivity per turbine etc.

Problems we heard from sales people.
Here are five of the top use cases for Talend Integration:
First, we have connecting apps whether they are in the cloud or on-premise.
Next, is providing developers with the option to offload workloads to the cloud, either because they are one-time projects or because they need extra capacity to meet seasonal demands.
Third, is a whole new style of integration that allows IT to partner with business users to meet integration needs.
Fourth, is supporting the ingestion of data sensors. This is a real-time use case, which will be supported by the end of the year.

Remember how I was saying that Gartner predicts that 65% of new integration flows will be developed outside of IT? Well, this is how IT can partner with the business, enable them to do more while still ensuring security and governance policies.

So a quick comparison. Lets take a use case where you would integrate Salesforce, Marketo and a cloud data warehouse like Amazon Redshift.
You could do this on-premise. You would need to buy the integration hardware, install and configure Talend. Then setup muliple test and deployment and management servers. Also, not shown, you would need to figure out security protocols to access these systems. In summary expensive and resource intensive.
