Here is the story which everyone of us may have heard. There was a man who
used to sell the caps. Once he was going to a town to sell the caps.
On the way he was tired and slept under a tree. When he woke up he found that
the bag in which he had kept the caps was empty, there was not a single cap
there!
He was surprised and started looking here and there. Suddenly he saw monkeys on the tree under
which he was sleeping. The monkeys were wearing his caps. Initially he tried to get the caps back from
the monkeys, by throwing stones at them. The monkeys in return started throwing fruits at him. Then
an idea came to his mind.
The cap seller looked at them, took the cap from his own head and threw it on the ground.
To his delight he found that monkeys also did the same thing and threw their caps on the ground. He
collected all the caps and went away.
Few years passed by. He used to tell this story about the monkeys to his son. When his son grew up,
he handed over the cap business to him. Once while his son was going to the town, same thing
happened to him.
When he got out of his sleep, under a tree, he saw that the monkeys are wearing the caps. But he
remembered his father's story. He looked at the monkeys and threw his cap on the ground. But he was
surprised to see that monkeys did not throw their caps on the ground!
He asked them “My father had told me that you will throw your caps, when I throw mine. Why you
didn't?” “We also have our father! We also have heard stories from them!”, replied the monkeys.

TITLE : Speed Control Of VFD Driven Motors
Vector Control Methods
The basic premise of vector control, also referred to as field oriented control (FOC), is to transform a three-phase system
that is dependent on time and speed into a two-coordinate (d and q), time invariant system. It does this mathematically
through the use of a Clarke transform and a Park transform.
In AC motors there are two components to the stator current: the magnetizing current (d) and the torque-producing current
(q). The magnetizing current lags the voltage by 90 degrees, and the torque-producing current is in phase with the voltage.
With Field Oriented Control, these two current components are controlled independently each with its own PI controller.
This allows the torque-producing component (q), to be kept orthogonal to the rotor flux for maximum torque production and
therefore, optimum speed & torque control.
When an encoder is used in conjunction with a vector drive to provide shaft position feedback, the system is referred to as
closed-loop. Information regarding the shaft position allows the controller to determine if the torque output is incorrect. That
is, if the shaft overshoots the desired position, then too much torque is being applied, and vice-versa. Based on shaft
position, the voltage can be adjusted to increase or decrease the torque, regardless of motor speed.
Open-Loop Vector Control
Like scalar methods, vector VFD control methods can be open-loop or closed-loop.
Open-loop vector control, also referred to as sensor-less vector control, uses a mathematical model of the motor operating
parameters, rather than using a physical feedback device.
The controller monitors voltage and current from the motor and compares them to the mathematical model. It then corrects
any errors by adjusting the current supplied to the motor, which adjusts the motor’s torque production accordingly.
With sensor-less vector control, it’s important to have a very accurate mathematical model of the motor, and the controller
must be tuned for proper operation.
In this context, “open-loop” is a misnomer. The system is actually closed-loop, but the feedback information comes from
within the VFD itself instead of from an external encoder. Therefore, open-loop vector drives are also referred to as “sensor-
less” vector drives.
Closed-loop vector control uses an encoder to provide shaft position feedback, and this information is sent to the controller,
which adjusts the supplied voltage to increase or decrease torque. This is the only method that allows direct torque control
in all four quadrants of motor operation for dynamic braking or regeneration.
Benefits Of Vector Control
Vector control methods are more complex than scalar VFD control methods, but they offer significant benefits over scalar
methods in some applications. For example, open-loop vector control enables the motor to produce high torque at low
speeds, and close-loop vector control allows a motor to produce up to 200 percent of its rated torque at zero speed, useful
for holding loads at standstill. Close-loop vector control also provides very accurate torque and speed control for industrial
applications.
Open-loop vector control provides tighter speed control, higher starting torque, and higher low-speed torque than simple
V/Hz control, and does so without adding significant cost. It also allows four quadrant torque limit and is beneficial for impact
loads without having necessity of using encoder.
Adrawback to open-loop vector control is that it has difficulty monitoring current and therefore making torque adjustments at
very low motor speeds.
Also, motor shaft does not respond accurately and auto tuning is needed for better accuracy.
For this reason, open-loop control is not recommended for applications that require holding a load at standstill. It can,
however, produce 100 percent of rated torque at speeds down to about 8 Hz, so it is sufficient for most applications that
require high torque at low speeds.
The most significant benefit of close-loop vector control is that it allows up to 200 percent of the motor’s rated torque to be
produced at 0 rpm. This is especially useful in applications that require holding a load at standstill, such as cranes and
hoists.Also, Four Quadrant torque is available. Close-loop vector control is also very similar to servo control, since the shaft
encoder can provide accurate travel feedback.
Close-loop vector control is required in processes where error accumulation should be avoided such as web applications in
the printing and converting industry.
4. APPLICATION CASE STUDY

Ÿ In the previous arrangement, the motors were operated through VFD and were stopped through
dynamic braking system which resulted in heavy energy loss.
Ÿ It was not possible to operate the rope way above 31 Hz, speed was a limiting factor.
Ÿ Drive used to trip frequently due to high amount of regeneration.
Ÿ More Bucket loading time resulting in less rope way output.
Ÿ Economical operation by reducing power consumption
of rope way.
Ÿ Rope way output is very less compared to capacity.
Ÿ Frequent tripping of the drive due to very heavy
regeneration.
Ÿ Unable to operate rope way above 31 Hz .
CHALLENGES SOLUTIONS

get over the problem of frequent tripping and prevent the
wastage of regenerative energy.
Ÿ Use of 4Q drive has resulted in increase of rope way
output by 50 %.
Ÿ System runs smoothly as regenerative energy is
diverted to another load.
Ÿ It is possible to operate rope way at 46 Hz, considerably
higher then the previous case.

unloading station of a mountain.

RedundantAVR system refers to the backup system, i.e., twoAVRs used (master-
slave combination).Two types of redundant systems exist:
1) Cold redundant
2) Hot redundant
1) Cold redundancy is for non-critical processes where time is not a high priority
and human intervention is acceptable. In this system if there is any failure occur
then manually we have replace that faulty part and start again.
2) Hot redundancy offers instant process correction when a failure is detected. In
this system there will be one standby system which will always follow the main
controller so, in case any failure happen then standby system will take over.
Using a motorized variac to control the DECS-150 output is an example of cold
redundancy, as human intervention is possible here.
Motor driven variacs are operated to maintain output voltage regulation as shown
in figure. This scheme can handle heavy surge currents frequently used in
industrial setting due to high surge capability.
