Amira Foods produces Golden Rice, a genetically engineered rice that contains beta-carotene, which the human body converts to vitamin A. Golden Rice contains genes from maize, daffodil, and soil bacteria that lead to the formation of lycopene in the grain, which is then converted to beta-carotene and other provitamin A carotenoids by enzymes in the grain. The latest varieties of Golden Rice can produce up to 36 micrograms per gram of beta-carotene, over 20 times more than original varieties developed 5 years ago.
