CNF Reflection:
Since I started this course, I realize how it will be challenging for me, first of all, I am an international freshman English major, so English is my second language. I thought, in the beginning, it will be easy, and I can do it as the native speakers, but unfortunately my scores don’t show that. I got difficulty with writing that much of papers and found it challenging. I said I will do my best and will work hard I might succeed and pass. I tried and squeezed my brain in hope to do better and better.
I started my CNF draft by telling a story of my young brother Yousef, who has rare condition illness. Just 300 statues in the whole world, I explained more about how our life as a family has changed before Yousef been a member of the family and after. Yousef adorable, kind and quiet child, who spends most of his life in hospitals. I hope to find the right medical treatment to this issue. I explained more about how our life was affected, how I had to leave everything behind me, as my country Saudi Arabia, my friends, my memories, and latterly everything. You can imagine how hard it could be.
Some of the comments that I had in my first CNF drafts were about where are you in the story? Why we can’t see you between the lines? I thought, in the beginning, I just want to tell the story that has a high meaning to me I could not deliver what I was feeling exactly. People can’t feel the way that you feel except if they went at the same situation that you went through. So they will understand why you wrote this and this. I was thinking about starting my CNF by saying “ there was a family included two brothers and two sisters” Which I am one of the sisters who is writing the story. But readers could not get what I was trying to do, the feedback was always asking for my feelings, and my voice not for someone telling a story about someone else.
To be honest, it was tough to rewrite it again and again, but I had to, so I can include my voice in the story to be able to deliver my character to the reader. I took their feedback seriously. So I made my final draft shorter than the second draft. I feel satisfied with my final draft. I could give a clear idea of the kind of transformation that my family and I had before and after Yousef’s illness. Also, I could put my voice as well so the reader will understand what was my feeling at those moments.
I decided to change the topic of the story from The Child Yousef into a Life Transformation. I thought it would be better at this way. Not being specific will give the reader that question in the heads before reading the story which is what kind of life transformation it could be? So this is the reason for seeing the topic is different in the first and second draft that in the final draft.
I included a lot of dialogues in my CNF I think they give life to your story and realism. I know it is hard to remember everything precisely happened in the past, but it is not hard to remember the general i ...

They also grew more comfortable expressing emotions, which will help them in future volunteer work and studying again in Japan. Overall, the experiences helped them learn about reasoning, emotion, perception, and language, which will aid their continued learning.

Stream of consciousness writing for fluency
Because so many students in Korea have been taught via a traditionally teacher-based educational system, students often become so focused on test scores, a passive method of using English. This leads them to frequent difficulties with spontaneous production – speaking and writing. Further, students rarely get the opportunity to express their personalities in the Korean classroom setting. These factors contribute to a decreased ability to interact except in the narrowest of circumstances, that is, an inability to engage in important skills in today’s business world – speaking and writing in a natural way.
The researcher has integrated a written assignment that requires students to express themselves in a simple and quick way, breaking their translation habit, and assisting them in writing in a more natural manner.
Beginning with a simple guided imagery technique, students are then taught stream of consciousness writing, a common exercise utilized by professional writers. It can be easily taught and supported in the classroom setting and takes very little effort on the part of the student or the teacher. Students become engaged in their writing, projecting personal representations of themselves in a simple yet profound manner. The assignment engages student creativity, passion, and interest.
This presentation explores the theory behind the assignment’s philosophy, presents the accumulated data of student response, and gives participants an opportunity to learn and practice the technique themselves.

Writing in English in China: An autobiographical essay

ABSTRACT: As one of the few Chinese writers in mainland China writing prose in English, Lijia Zhang
presents an autobiographical account of her decision to write and publish in the English language. This
paper describes how Lijia Zhang first taught herself English, as she perceived the language as offering her
an ‘escape’ from working as a factory worker in Nanjing to how she finally established herself as a published
author writing in the English language. This paper also presents Lijia Zhang’s personal reflections on the
reasons why she writes in English, and also how she ‘weaves’ Chinese expressions and concepts in her use
of the English language in her writing. Lijia Zhang’s much-acclaimed memoir on coming of age in China,
Socialism is great: A worker’s memoir of the new China, was published in 2008, and has been translated
into Dutch, Italian, French and Portuguese. The memoir has been also been translated into Korean and her
first novel Lotus is to be published by Henry Holt in February 2017.
‘Why do you write in English?’ People frequently ask me this question. I am Chinese
born, bred and educated – very poorly – in China, yet I write articles for interna-
tional publications and books in English and I give lectures and public speeches in
English.
I began to teach myself English at 21 when I was still a rocket factory girl in my
hometown Nanjing, on the banks of the Yangtze River. I had grown up in a residential
compound that belonged to the military factory my mother worked for. All my neighbours
were factory workers and all my friends were the children of workers. But I had a grand plan
for myself: excelling academically at school, I had hoped to go to university and become a
writer and a journalist. (Actually I didn’t quite understand the difference between a writer
and a journalist as I do now.)
When I was 16, however, my mother dragged me out of the school and put me to work
at the same factory. The reason was simple: we were poor. My assigned job was to test
pressure gauges, simple and repetitive. A mini Communist empire, the factory provided
the workers with accommodation, dining halls and hospitals, it also controlled all aspects
of our lives.
As an escape route, I decided to teach myself English, in the hope of obtaining a job
as an interpreter with one of the foreign companies that were slowly setting up shop in
Nanjing. To start with, I borrowed a radio from my cousin and followed an English-teaching
programme called The New Concept English. New concept indeed. I became fascinated
by this language system so different from our characters. So much so, I would find myself
talking English to myself or singing English songs:
